Why is aoe2 still more popular than the third one?

I played aoe3 like 15 years ago so dunno but I guess its just a better game overall and has a healthy competitive community. Recently they released new expansions which made the game more dynamic and fun and they have a well developed platform to play (Voobly) with a patch that fixes many problems of the original game. Also the fact that the game is not 3D but instead uses high res sprites made it age a lot better.

for me i was used to the isometric view of the game, and aoe3 felt too cartoony. it seemed to be the theme back then. i guess if you started playing games after isometric ones died then 3d would seem normal

Yeah I played Aoe2 after being introduced to aoe3. Considering I am not an avid gamer to me aoe2 felt a bit too outdated.

Aoe3 has fewer civs (in a time period that had more), smaller maps, and a stupid card mechanic. The 3D I don't mind and think has aged very well, compared to a lot of 3D back in the day. The water is indeed beautiful, as are the boat and building models, and the units aren't half bad. Too bad the gameplay doesn't have enough replay value to offer, or it could've been a proper successor to the franchise.

3rd was too unbalanced I think.

I liked the cards actually but then again I only played with my friends and we always unlocked all the cards for all of us.

The voobly competitive scene for AoM is great dude you should try it. The EE on Steam looks amazing but multiplayer is glitchy for anything more than a 1v1.

I watched Daut (aoe2 pro) play it a few days ago and the game looked pretty boring in a competitive setting. Aoe2 is already a slow game, but AOM looked even slower and seemed to go on forever. Not sure if it's my thing.
