One time when I was in elementary school I had a teacher tell me that plesiosaurus was not a dinosaur because it lived in the water. I sat in stunned silence as nobody called her out on it. Turns out, most kids didn't read encyclopedias when they went home. I politely corrected her but was told "nah, you're wrong kiddo. I'm the teacher, which means I'm right" and the class agreed. Refusing to back down, I pressed the issue. She threatened to send me to the principal's office if I didn't shut up and let her move on. I had lost the battle, but the war had just begun. That night I grabbed my "P" volume of the encyclopedia, opened to the relevant page, then realized reading encyclopedias doesn't make you smart because the teacher was right and plesiosaurus is not a dinosaur.
