Social media giants (FB, Twatter and Reddit in particular) are perhaps the only case where i would advocate a government takeover (a la tankie methods). Its clear that social media is, and forever will be a part of human culture, so why not have a joint venture between leading governments to create a public and open institution running them?
So long as they are in private hands, behind closed doors, they will remain out of control and constantly looking for profit and market share. A non-profit, funded by several governments and completely transparent, would without question be healthier for humanity as a whole

Facebook allowed some companies to maintain "Full access" to users' friends data even after announcing changes to its platform in 2014/2015 to limit what developers' could see.
Facebook used data provided by the Israeli analytics firm Onavo to determine which other mobile apps were being downloaded and used by the public.
