It does actually kind of make sense to have a genuinely dedicated space command, given the number of vital military and civil assets just floating out there in near earth orbit just waiting to be blown up by China or Russia in the event of a conflict, and the number of Russian and Chinese assets which probably should be monitored or (in a conflict) destroyed to maintain superiority of any battlefield. Also east and west are going to start squabbling over asteroids and moon bases and whatnot sooner or later.
