It would involve getting lots of equipment, supplies, and troops to the middle of undistirbed habitat, causing extensive damage to the forest. If you occupy areas around the Amazon, you’re going to fuck over a lot of the more sustainable farmers.
Afterwards, it would leave a lot of free infrastructure for poachers, loggers, and illegal miners. In some parts of Africa, the main impact from logging is less the cutting of trees and more opening roads in the jungle for poachers.
It would also give Bolsonaro an excuse to do further militarization and suppression of citizens.
