So grammatical gender rarely ever actually lines up perfectly with natural gender. Which is to say in any language with grammatical gender feminine and masculine nouns don't necessarily match up with the actual gender of the thing being described (the Spanish word for feminism for instance, feminismo, is a masculine noun). Grammatical gender is a method of noun categorization. Many linguists don't even consider noun categorization and grammatical gender to be 2 separate ideas
As to why some languages categorize nouns in these complex ways, it's likely a natural evolution from the simple ways their ancestor languages categorized nouns. Namely the Proto-Indo-European family of languages, whose descendant languages comprise the native languages of 42% of the entire human population (including all the romance languages, English, German, Hindi-Urdu, Russian, Punjabi, among others)
The Proto-Indo-European language categorized nouns into two groups, animate and inanimate. Gendering nouns is simply an extension of that (some languages in Papua New Guinea have 4 "genders", feminine, masculine, animate, and inanimate)
The point of gendering nouns was probably originally just a method for describing physical characteristics. ie vaguely phallic shaped objects were given names that were grammatically masculine.
English was a gendered language prior to the Normans actually.
