One reason is that even though the movie has average story, average acting, average direction, etc it showed black people in positive light that was unheard of before to see it all in a single movie: As heroes, warriors, as scientists, as kings, as queens, etc.

Another reason is marvel fans. Thanks to the marvel name attached to the films, black panther got the usual marvel loving crowd. This also played a big role.

Another reason is the general nature of viral trends. Black panther went viral because it was popular and it ended up having a ripple effect of getting more popular because it is popular. There is no way to predict when or how or why things go viral.

I guess the part that was kinda neat was that Killmonger had a cause of helping disenfranchised black people around the world, which makes him less of a cardboard cutout of a villain.
