I tried out Lazarus and FPC specifically because of seeing Akira go on about them on PCJ, and have since used them for three projects. They actually are exactly what he says they are. Honestly really underrated projects in a pretty unfortunate way, I'd say. I totally get why he seems to be so frustrated by certain topics of conversation now.
I guess I do get a bit frustrated sometimes. Recently I've started trying to be productive about it, though. Like, I find Rust to be an interesting language, but they have in my view usability issues out the wazoo.
So, when I see stuff like the functionality being discussed in this Rust RFC, for example, which is to me literally the only way I think makes sense to link against external libraries (anything else is just worse IMO, sorry), I leave (normal/professional/cordial) comments pointing out that it is in fact something that's been very much done before in a cross platform way and that is really not a big deal, at all.
Whether anyone pays attention, I don't know. I'd assumed the Rust devs were the types to look to a wide variety of sources for precedent, but I can't say for sure whether that's true or not.
I do know that I certainly won't be using Rust in any serious capacity as long as the "sys" crates (in their current form) are considered a normal, good thing.
No, Mr. Crateman, I do not want you to bundle some random version of the C library in question, and then run a build script that essentially never works because you don't know what you're doing in an atttempt to invoke my C compiler and build it. I already have that library installed, and I just want to bind it, nothing more.
I used to be a frequent commenter on PCJ on another account some years ago when it was much smaller, but it got progressively shitter over time and has just become another bog-standard CJ sub (i.e. just repeating shitty memes and being a bigger circlejerk than the thing it's actually mocking)
I finally noped out when the whole fucking front page was just cmov tarding out about Go for months
Now when I occasionally look back it's a little better again but about 50%+ of the comments are completely retarded and would've probably made the 'old guard' (RIP cactus, lghglglhhl) cringe in to the next century
The laziness and sanity of those (of us) who remained set the bar for the people who came by later, and it turned into HN+memes. To be had, cactus and lghglglggl posts seemed to take a lot of energy, most people aren't willing to put that much energy to make a quality CJ sub.
