I am thoroughly trouncing you. I've seen your mo and I spanked you at your own game. I found your flaw and exploited it quite nicely, my slaughtered braised goose.
it's a meme you fucking dumbass, the 30 year old boomer. it's specifically about 30 year olds who talk about games from when they were a kid (duke nukem, quake, etc).
Dude I fucking loved Duke Nukem Forever. Literally bought it twice
People have been saying it was disappointing/mediocre almost a full decade since, but I just don't get it. Unmet expectations aside, I can't think of any reason it should have as bad of a reputation as it has
good god it was so bad, idk where to start. first off, the humor was super cringe, like it had references to internet memes that were like 8 years old. who the fuck wrote the jokes? the shooting and actual gameplay was solidly average and just a mishmash of random shit from halo and other modern shooters. i mean i guess they never promised that it would be old school, but put in so many jokes making fun of modern FPS franchises that being a generic uninspired clone of all them was that much more pathetic.
annoying puzzle segments that had no place in the game, i mean having to take a detour from the mediocre FPS gameplay to move a remote control car carefully up a ramp for 40 mins was absurd. they weren't fun or even difficult, just time consuming and annoying, and why the fuck where they even there? it's duke nukem not resident evil.
What sort of humour did you expect from a character that's supposed to be the epitome of meathead machismo? Did you really expect Duke to formulate sentences more complex than his 9 syllable one-liners? And the power armor was both an easter egg, and a self-aware quip (iirc he said something like "who needs that" implying the game is aware of the irony)
mediocre shooter
I found it smooth and somewhat polished, but you're right in saying it was nothing stellar. I can see how only two guns could irk some people
detours from FPS gameplay
I fucking loved that part. I guess it would suck if someone only wanted to play the shooting parts, but the variety of interactable overworld stuff was great (bench pressing for ego, killing pigs by throwing dumbells at their head, smacking tits on a wall, playing the slot machines, etc). Maybe it wasn't fair of them to make the RC car parts mandatory since not everyone enjoys the variety, but it would have been so much more dry and boring if all it had were the shooter element
Look at it this way, they spent so much time putting it off, and ran into so many budgetary issues, that eventually it was either releasing a softcore shooter with stale references to tickle the nostalgia factor, or releasing nothing at all and being canned like HL3. At least they had the balls to release it after all those years
What sort of humour did you expect from a character that's supposed to be the epitome of meathead machismo?
the humor in duke 3d was pop culture references and such and it was actually pretty funny. "hur dur duke is dumb tho" isn't a solid argument as to why forever only had poop jokes and severely aged memes as the "humor". why the hell can't a parody of macho 90s action heroes actually be funny?
that wasn't the power armor joke. the joke was that a soldier dude says to duke "we have your power armor ready", then master chiefs armor is sitting in the back of a truck. duke then says "power armor is for pussies", then the next battle proceeds to have you hiding behind stuff while your "ego meter" recharges lol.
i'm not talking about the interactive stuff i'm talking about the annoying puzzles that took forever and weren't good at all. i actually found duke randomly interacting with the environment to be one of the best parts of the game.
At least they had the balls to release it after all those years
they were better off not releasing it. if they didn't release it, after doom 2016 came out, they would have realised there is a huge market for shooters that cater to old school boomers that liked those old duke 3d style games, and possibly we'd have a duke game similar to the doom game.
instead, no one is going to touch the duke nukem IP for an extremely long time because, even if you like this game, most of the world found so incredibly fucking awful that it's basic existence is a meme.
I don't get the whole humour part, did you want him shouting "I can haz cheeseburger" and drawing le trollface on every wall? There was no pop culture to point to, they had to count on outdated nostalgia references. You're right, the old Duke had topical comments, but that's absolutely impossible to do now, since there is no longer any pop culture to speak of
And I completely disagree about not releasing it instead. Half life 3 was teased at and hyped up for years before they scrapped it, people looking forward to finding out how the story ended had to read it off some shitty online text hosting site. No good ever came from putting a game off indefinitely or canceling it just because it wasn't perfect
Look at Painkiller. That one adopted to the newer shooter market, and even kept the multiple weapon system that you mentioned. What came of it but mediocrity?
And sure the IP is dead, but so are many others from the time period. I loved playing Blood for msDOS when I was younger, and not just me since it was rated very highly by reviewers, yet these days 99.5% of the people you ask will say they've never even heard of it
"what do you want from the humor" to be fucking funny lol. i don't understand why you don't get that bad humor is bad humor, are you stupid or just pretending to be? either don't put any jokes in or make them actually funny. referencing 10 year old memes and having duke throw poop at a wall is literally so bad they just shouldn't have done it, and i have no idea why you'd defend it.
you seem to be hiding behind some weird like, "what do you expect it's duke nukem" shit which i just don't agree with. if duke nukem is such a shitty character that dumbass poo jokes are literally all you can write with him, he would never have been popular in the first place. except he isn't, they just wrote shitty jokes for this game, literally no way to defend it, they fucked up.
And I completely disagree about not releasing it instead.
gearbox, who owns the IP, literally said that they aren't going to make another game most likely, since forever flopped so hard. everything works on money, and whoever runs the company has shelved any future plans to make new games because the old one bombed.
it doesn't matter what you agree with or don't agree with, the money makers see no future dollar signs from duke now , so that's it, they fucked up any chance of getting a new game for ages, we now have to wait for someone else who gives a shit to purchase th IP from them probably.
Look at Painkiller. That one adopted to the newer shooter market, and even kept the multiple weapon system that you mentioned. What came of it but mediocrity?
painkiller since the very first game was always generic and shitty, duke 3d was an innovative classic. stupid ass comparison. painkiller isn't considered shit because it has multi weapon system, it's shite because it's a shite generic average fps, i can't even fathom how stupid blaming it's failure on not having only two guns is, jesus christ.
And sure the IP is dead, but so are many others from the time period. I loved playing Blood for msDOS when I was younger, and not just me since it was rated very highly by reviewers, yet these days 99.5% of the people you ask will say they've never even heard of it
they make shadow warrior games now, shadow warrior is literally the same as blood, made with the same engine as duke 3d and one of the same type of fps games from around that time period, and they managed to make decent modern games of it, you should play them.
no reason the same can't happen to blood. but there is a reason duke was more popular than both those games, i'd rather have a new AAA duke game than resurrecting second tier fps games from the same time period.
On a scale of X-COM to Planescape Torment how "old-school" RPG is it? Because tbf I don't like roleplaying through locking trees as much as I like character growth and lethal turn based combat.
It’s a tactical mob RPG. There isn’t a singular player character in the game. You have a squad that splits responsibility, including the social skills.
There isn’t traditional character growth, but there are a lot of branching quests that can have different outcomes on the world. Some quest outcomes are much more involved and require more thinking than others. You will rarely get a “best outcome” on quests if you don’t know about them beforehand. There are also many quests that lock out an alternate option. For example: Your very first quest forces you to pick between saving two villages, you can only save one. Whatever you pick gives you different rewards and shapes the early game.
Individual characters level up in a fairly intuitive old school way. The current Director’s Cut has perks to pick from. You recruit optional NPCs along the way to round out a squad.
Combat can be pretty brutal, especially if your squad isn’t somewhat optimized. It is still somewhat unbalanced towards assault rifles/energy guns, but you can’t just equip everybody with them because you won’t have enough ammo for everybody. Enemy AI is very simplistic. Battles are won or lost mostly based on your squad build and your ability to quickly take out high threat enemies first.
Are the choices at least somewhat reasonable, at least in retrospect? I don't want F:NV tiers of interaction where characters will randomly hate you for stuff you only find out about afterwards and the worst: Surprise skill checks that punish you for talking to people before grinding up levels.
Minor rewards/choices are locked behind specific skills. You can for example break into locked area by either throwing a grenade (fairly rare early on), brute forcing it, or picking the lock. The game gives choices, if you have none of those your squad sucks.
You will need at least one computer nerd to not stumble through the game haphazardly.
Dialog skills mostly help you shortcut some things or net you extra items.
Bigger reactions to player choices are generally foreshadowed or just common sense. You can dig up the corpse of a dead ranger and loot the body in front of their partner, but the partner will start shooting you.
3 skill monkeys / some combat stats (you need a variety of skills and you don’t want a generalist monkey. Every monkey is specc’d 2-3 non combat skills, 1 combat skill)
1 computer nerd
2 combat heavy dudes. Any mix of assault rifles, sniper rifles, melee, or blunt weapons
I know guys, let's buy up a studio known for RPGs with large branching dialouge and plot trees and then strip all the talent out of it so they can make our shitty destiny clone
SMH my head, I'm gonna go play Mass Effect again and have a spicy jerk for 40 hours 🤤
I'm not sure what EA was thinking in this scenario. Why would you buy Bioware and then have them crank-out the nth iteration of generic space marine pewpew games? It's like buying Five Guys and deciding to turn it into a Asian Fusion fast-casual joint.
They cannot figure out how to make a mediocre game at launch that still has that spark to keep people playing, while then building up the playerbase with consistent improvements
Which to be fair, it's kind of hard to pinpoint exactly how the fuck that happened with Destiny, but it's not like they don't have a lot of people who tried to figure it out
oh I can answer that for Destiny since I played from the beginning.
Destiny at the beginning didn't have a ton of content, the story was short and mediocre at best.
So what did it have? Fucking fantastic gunplay. That and just enough of an interesting universe that at least some people (enough people clearly) stuck with it.
I am actually kind of seeing a parallel here with Anthem. The story is short and mediocre. The amount of end game content is pretty low. Lower even than Destiny was at launch. All that being said the actual gameplay with the Javelins is pretty awesome. If Bioware can keep adding content and shore up the game it at least has the potential to have a large thriving userbase like Destiny does now.
Oh I love Destiny, and I used to believe it was the gunplay as well, but honestly that can't be it when you've also got games like Titanfall around. I do believe at first a lot of it was leftover Halo loyalty though
I did try titanfall 2 recently. It's pretty good but the guns themselves aren't anything special. Yeah the enhanced movement is great at the titan gameplay is fun but there's no unique cool guns to play with in it.
Not saying titanfall 2 is bad. Far from it. Just none of the guns in really impressed me. It's just a solid well made FPS IMO.
no clue on multiplayer. Single player is pretty good actually. You can get access to the full game for a month with origin access basic. That and a variety of other games for 5 bucks a month or 30 a year. It's not a bad deal considering it's EA.
I always though it's market were for people who wouldn't play MMO's because they're stuck up. I know tons of people who wouldn't play them because they look down on them. Basically the old "filthy casual" thing. But they all played Destiny and were jerking themselves off to this game.

Hahaha, holy fuck how do people keep getting duped into buying these garbage games?
Do they not have a media hype filter to realize when a product looks like crap?
1 d-amazo 2019-02-18
no, most of them only made an opinion on a game after Totalbiscuit told them what to think, and when he died all that was left was Jim Sterling
he's too busy crying about capitalism now to tell fuckboy gamers on reddit what to think about new video games, so most gamers are lost.
1 2938_throwd 2019-02-18
Pathetic.
I’m happy that shiny new engines and graphics don’t mean shit to me. The last shooter I bought was Duke Nukem 3D (the original game, not DNF) for PS4.

I'm guessing the online community for Titanfall 2 is long dead at this point. Is there enough single-player content for it to be worth buying?

no clue on multiplayer. Single player is pretty good actually. You can get access to the full game for a month with origin access basic. That and a variety of other games for 5 bucks a month or 30 a year. It's not a bad deal considering it's EA.

I don't understand the appeal of looter shooters, its just MMO lite.

I always though it's market were for people who wouldn't play MMO's because they're stuck up. I know tons of people who wouldn't play them because they look down on them. Basically the old "filthy casual" thing. But they all played Destiny and were jerking themselves off to this game.

The game isn’t out yet.
1 POST_BUSSY 2019-02-18
I think you can play it now if you have the EA subscription service (origin access or something).
1 Dramaste 2019-02-18
Yeah but it's not out yet
1 POST_BUSSY 2019-02-18
I mean... it's not like the game is going to change drastically within 3 days.
