Reddit loves to jerk off to adopting but generally you don’t know what the whole history of the dog is. Shelters aren’t known for being 100% honest on the dog’s past, so you’re taking on extra risk.
Too many people own dogs when they shouldn’t, and then just dump them at the shelter when they can’t handle it.
Not only that, these people wouldn’t know a pure bred if it bit them on their throat. Most of the “pure breds” you find in shelters are absolute abominations of the breed.
Nobody just drops off expensive pure breds at the shelter because you could easily turn those into cash in a single day by posting on Craigslist.
I volunteered at a shelter and I can remember plenty of dogs being brought back for surprising reasons. A couple of dogs killed the family cat. Some turned out to be biters even though they were never aggressive at the shelter.
It's impossible to tell how they're going to behave in all situations. If you get a puppy you get to raise it and hopefully minimize the risk of it biting strangers or eating your cat.
The only shit breeders are the pitbull ones. These people calling her an asshole on her are just getting butthurt because she'd rather get a dog not known for eating children.
I guess that's why anecdotal evidence is only worth so much. I don't associate with dirty brown water trash and I don't understand why someone would buy a pit when shelters will practically pay people to take those breeds off of there hands around here. Looking at the shelters around here, probably 98%+ of all the dogs are pit mixes and the other 2% have some major disability and require a stupid amount of care.

lol i adopted a (lost) dog who from a shelter and had it for 4 months when it’s own owner saw us on a walk and the dog wanted to stay with him. super sad for me and my family. the shelter never told me any history of the dog. probably won’t adopt ever again.
