I work with them, some days are busier than others, but is the only crisis hotline that is safe for trans people, other suicide hotlines call the police without permission, which often leads to worse situations for the caller.

Isn't the whole fucking purpose of a suicide hotline to preserve life, which can be accomplished by sectioning them and putting them in a controlled environment so they don't self harm?

Like it always bugs me when people complain about police restraining suicidal people because sectioning achieves the following:

1. Removes them from their environment, which with a clean break can result in a clearer mind because environment is typically a major contributor towards suicidal intentions.
2. Allows them to be monitored 24/7
3. Can give them access to high priority therapy and have medication changes in a controlled environment.

But somehow this is bad because muh freedoms? De-escalating a suicide attempt is one thing but without attempting to identify the key triggers and contributors TOWARDS those suicidal thoughts they're likely to just attempt again the next day or the next week or the next month.

Maybe someone is suicidal because their medication is out of whack and needs adjusted, in a case like that sectioning will help. Maybe someone is suicidal because of a mental breakdown, in which case sectioning will help. Maybe someone is suicidal because they are being abused by family or a partner, in which case sectioning will help.

That helpline is actually putting trans lives in danger.

I dont know what the founders deal is, but I have heard many awful stories from others in the community who have had the police called on them during suicide hotline calls.

When police come to respond to a suicide call, it is actually kinda dangerous even in the best of situation. The police generally dont take those calls seriously, arrest the person and treat them poorly, and sometimes use unnecessary and dangerous force. It is even worse for trans people, who are often actively assaulted by police responding to those calls, arrested, put in cells that dont align with their gender where they risk assault at the hands of other prisoners, are institutionalized against their will when they might not really have needed it, and are often worse off mentally and emotionally afterwards.

Trans lifeline is staffed by trans people, many of whom have dealt with suicidality themselves in the past, and that understanding is important when counseling someone, other hotlines do not have that training or experience, and can make it worse by misgendering the person and giving bad advice.

If a volunteer believes there is imminent danger and it is worth taking that risk to save someone, they can definitly encourage the person to allow them to call emergency services, and are trained to call EMS services and not the police wherever possible.

US police aren't known for being tactful or gentle. Suicidal people need help and reassurance, not a squad breaking down their door.

Unfortunately no, they are not doing it for attention. Gender dysphoria is a seriously shitty disorder to deal with, and nothing to mess around with. Like I said to the other poster, police often make the situation worse for trans people, mocking them, misgendering them, harassing them, placing them in the wrong cells, and sometimes assaulting them. Trans lifeline operators are trained to encourage callers who are in immement danger to allow them to call emergency services for them, and also make sure to specifically call local EMS departments whenever possible instead of local police or even worse, sheriff departments (which are who is usually called if a 911 call is placed)

Ok.....and guess what......you don't tell Mandated Reporters you are going to kill yourself on lines that are recorded. If they ignore it, they get into serious trouble.

Its better if there is somewhere to call that people dont have to worry about being arrested, it allows callers to speak with honesty. If they are calling, they want to seek help, and probably arent right on that edge yet. If they are, we encourage them to allow us to call EMS.

We do report in states that have mandatory reporter laws, but we dont ask the caller their address or full name unless they are consenting to allow us to call. We give 911 all the information we have when we have to by law without consent, which is basically just that a person called the hotline, and their first name.

Trans people are not confused, or disturbed. Gender Dysphoria is a mental health issue, but being transgender is a sex condition. Calling the police on callers creates dangerous situations for the caller, and discourages people from using the hotline when they need it out of fear of being arrested/assaulted/harassed or otherwise poorly treated by police that respond. We do encourage them to allow us to call EMS departments if they are in imminent danger.

People calling a suicide hotline are disturb. People who have a mental illness are mental ill. Chopping a dick off or slapping a dick on something doesn't make it the opposite gender. Just makes a mutilated human. It will be fun looking back on this in ten or 15 years when people will look back at this barbaric medical practice in horror. You don't treated schizophrenia by acting like the delusions are real, same for the mental disorder of trannies.

Gender dysphoria isnt a delusion, it's a dysphoria, which is why it has it in the name right there. People are the gender identity that they are, it is innate and unchangable. Being transgender is a sex condition, where their gender identity (which is biologically based in the brain) does not match the rest of their biological gender. This often causes gender dysphoria, the mental disorder, which is very treatable through transition. No other treatment has yet been shown to be consistently effective at alleviating it.

Post transition, the suicide attempt rate falls to between 5 and 8 percent, depending the study, and falls further to the national average when adjusting for people living in supportive communities post transition. I'd say an 80% reduction in risk is a pretty effective treatment.

If a child needs it, puberty blockers are very effective. I'm not on board with affirmation based therapy for minors though, it needs more diagnostic process. Puberty blockers have already been used as a treatment for other things for some time without issue, the child developed normally if they stop them.

I'm willing to bet if they released the audio from those phone calls, the trans individuals were more than likely saying they were going to actively harm themselves. Sorry but I side with the suicide lines fro calling considering they are more or less bound to when someone confirms they will take their life. Same as for teachers, police and medical staff.

They sometimes do, and in those instances we encourage callers to provide personal information and allow us to call their local EMS if they have it, and I havent had someone say no who I could see needed it yet, their police department if they dont have a designated EMS nearby, or their sheriff department as a last resort. Some states have mandatory reporting laws, which we follow, but we dont require callers to provide personal information up front.
