tl;dr another version of this guy, a character named "Emiya," got released in the english version of the game. The original version can conjure swords from nothing, this new version uses guns instead. On the Japanese side of things (where he's been out for at least 2 years), he's called to as "Demiya," short for "Detroit Emiya," and iirc the guy who created the whole franchise once referred to him as a "what-if" of Emiya going to prison.
Once he got released onto the english side of things localization team lightened his skin tone and gamers are rising up.
There are several points that you've missed in your summary as to why people are upset about this:

- The team behind the English version have said that they won't change anything in an interview in 2017

- Emiya Alter (the character is question) is from a timeline where he abused magic to the point of making his skin that dark, the "going to prison bits" are referring to the hairstyle and tattoos rather than skin colour.

- Alter is now whiter than "original" Emiya which doesn't make much sense given the character's lore.

Basically it's censorship that doesn't take the source material into account for the sake of preventing outrage from people who don't care let alone know the whole story.

Oh yes, the classic censorship move of making a character have slightly clearer skin tone, the audacity!
The ‘censorship’ is that they lightened a darkskinned dude because they wanted to avoid controversy.
Which is funny because everyone who’s followed just a bit of the lote knows this isn’t even a skin color thing. It’s more like being a magical burn victim. It’s closer to going necrotic than being darker skin (the other ‘alter’ characters have similar things going on).
Yep that's what burn victims look like. Clearly not an ignorant Jap character designer subconsciously basing things off of the common historical darkie archetype because they were lazy and why not.
This is actually a big problem with a lot of japanese imports. The Japanese seem to openly base a lot of characters designs based on the common 'darkie' theme. I don't know why they do this, if it's subconscious and they just don't think about it, but they do.
And weebs get super mad when importers make changes. Like there was one darkie themed character in a scene of one piece, one importer changed this, and you would think they were literally defacing the mona Lisa from the reaction.

It's just a video game, man. They're targeted at kids, not the pedos who haven't grown out of them.
1 AStat321 2019-02-25
Fate started out as a adult VN. The exact opposite of targeted at children.

its not really fair to calling it a kids video game dude
its more like a gambling app where you spend real life money to get a chance to get jpgs of your waifu

Dude, introspection time. You just wrote an essay about a video game character.

It's a fucking video game, you nerd. Stop crying.

“Magical burn victim”
Corruption, the evil, etc. The more you use it, the more it affects ya and stuff. You literally missed the ‘magical’ part lmao

He’s clearly intended to be African. Even with the recoloring you can see it in the art style.
He just looks like lighter skinned black now.

Love how all the racists and pedophiles are crying about censorship with this game

Zomg they're literally defacing the mona lisa
This is important

Not prison, it's what if he killed everyone close to him in an effort to emulate capeshit.
1 Cuckmeister 2019-02-25
The artist literally said he's supposed to look like a guy who went to prison
1 Shitposting_Skeleton 2019-02-25
Yeah but he went to prison and got executed in both versions. And the artist isn't Nasu.
1 Cuckmeister 2019-02-25
Regular Emiya didn't race change from Japanese to African by going to prison though
1 Shitposting_Skeleton 2019-02-25
He did however change to chocolate.
1 Kiru-Kokujin35 2019-02-25
even ignoring the dark skin he looks like a stereotypical prisoner
1 GandalftheChromatic 2019-02-25
I could not fathom caring this much about a gacha """game""
1 Frostfright 2019-02-25
It made no sense that Emiya became Wakandan-American to begin with
should've just gone the full nine and made him completely mayo again like when he was a kid
1 Shitposting_Skeleton 2019-02-25
Emiya's clearly a ginger [[[Hibernian]]]

It's also funny because the game has a couple of actual African characters and they don't look anything like that.
