Probably both. His shtick wore thin pretty quickly, and once he started opining on actual topics he looked like an actual idiot. It didn’t help that he looks like a depressed, sleepless, basement dwelling loser.
same as what happened to every other site: outrage porn get clicks and can be churned out 24/7 by otherwise unemployable lib arts ideologues for beans and rice
I think they hired a bunch of new columnists in the early to mid 2010s. I’d check it sporadically during my undergrad and there were a bunch of new names who’s columns weren’t anywhere close to being funny.
It tries really hard to be buzzfeed, but there's no reason to have yet ANOTHER buzzfeed. I wonder how many less pageviews they get now compared to what they used to.
Dan wasn't consistently the funniest but he had the best material when it clicked, ya know? Even if he was the fifth funniest, he was still ten times as funny as the site is now.

You're oversimplifying a complex situation to the point of adding nothing to the discussion.

I read Maddox too, thought he was funny.

Same. When I got a little older, reading them became irritating so I just stopped.

Did his sense of humor change or was I just more of a shit bag back then?

Dude, Dan O'Brian used to put out some of the greatest articles week after week.
His "Wikipedia killed Ted Kennedy" is probably one of the funniest things ever.
I don't know how the funniest site ever that always had one good article a day became so trash.

I didn't hate Dan, but he was like the fifth funniest major contributor.
