Let's not get too crazy, top programs expect residents to research and publish, and nearly all programs prefer it. Medical schools love researchers, it's how you increase revenue. The most that can be said is that the more successful the researcher, the higher risk of character problems.
Publishing is one thing, starting business ventures based on research while still in residency is where I start to get creeped out as a prospective patient.
Personal bias I guess. I just feel like clinic/OR should be your top priority as a resident, if you intend to actually practice in that specialty.
