If you start from the assumption that people are equal, then outcomes can be used as a reasonable measure of equality of opportunity.

This is true.

Someone just never bothered to learn what happens when you assume.

People are in general more equal than not

They are not millions of times unequal as the free market would indicate

That is due to the mathematical nature of the accumulation of wealth from interest regardless of worth, which naturally results in runaway inequality in wealth regardless of how equal the participants in the game are.

Equality of opportunity is a meaningless concept, people always use it to justify the status quo. It's like the republican position on ensuring everyone has 'access' to Healthcare, it means Jack shit.

When these people say they want to employ based on 'merit' they mean leave it up to the arbitrary whims of the manager. I.e. His nephew. There is no meritocracy in the US.
