Kurzgesagt drama effort post.
184 2019-03-13 by Ghdust2
A YouTube channel called Kurzgesagt makes edutainment videos that feature high quality animation and production value (for YouTube at least). Through these videos the channel has become incredibly popular, having over 8.2 million subscribers. About a week ago they published a video titled Can You Trust Kurzgesagt Videos?, where they basically discussed their fact checking process and their removal of a video on addiction that was in fact inaccurate.
Another edutainment channel called Coffee Break released a video titled Trust - In A Nutshell, where he claims that Kurzgesagt only deleted this video for damage control purposes after receiving a series of difficult questions from Coffee Break on its research.
Needless to say r/kurzgesagt is in shambles and the channel has entered full fledged damage control now.
The thread for the video on r/kurzgesagt.
Kurzgesagts AMA in response to the video.
Other edutainment Youtuber CPC Grey's response to Coffee Break's video.
CoffeeBreak has a twitter thread going to continue to fight for his side of the story.

This question part of this little AMA thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/kurzgesagt/comments/b0bgvj/ama_2_can_you_trust_kurzgesagt/eide4us/
I thought would be the most decisive in my judgement of Kyrgyzstan of whatever his name is. I figured someone would just ask Hari to clarify if he did indeed help write most of the script or if Kegglestan is pulling off some incredible double down.

Eh, not really
It's pretty boring either way
1 dabayer 2019-03-13
Even more boring since the emails show kurzgesagt did nothing wrong and Coffeebreak constructed some BS smear campaign.
Is OP a cheap Coffeebreak shill?

OP is cofee break himself

Deliberately spreading misinformation about the refugee crisis and then delete it after years, with the only explanation being "yeah it wasn't up to our superscientific top standards". No wonder people hate 'journalism'.
1 vtesterlwg 2019-03-13
what sort of misinformation? dont keep this private
1 Minimum_T-Giraff 2019-03-13
A lot of stupid shit. Like refugees is good for the economy when all other stats in Europe points it at they are just a money sink for European economies.
1 Van-Diemen 2019-03-13
To be fair, Syrians were more educated than normal for the region, but it was far from just Syrians arriving.
Even when the video was uploaded it was something stupid like 16% of the total.
You had black Africans or Bengalis showing up who couldn't speak a word of Arabic claiming to be fleeing violence in Syria and everyone just had to nod along and pretend not to notice.
1 Patsy02 2019-03-13
Syrians are the third most expensive immigrant in Norway, after Somalis and Iraqis. Over their lifetime, they cost the Norwegian tax payer around NOK 4 million, about USD 500k.
1 Siverix 2019-03-13
wow that's 9 cent's per person for a single rapefugee . That shit adds up.
1 FmW-41 2019-03-13
Here's a list from 3 years ago that covers a few, but literally the entire thing is just a propaganda piece of this meme masked as fact.
The best part is, when they made the recent video on why they deleted the Refugee Crisis and Addiction videos, they were happy to go into lots of detail on why they deleted the Addiction video, but basically no real reason as to why they deleted the Refugee one except that it was 'rushed' or 'not relevant any more'. Had they actually gone into detail on the Refugee sourcing, it would have made them out to be much, much worse than the Addiction video.
1 White_Dudeness 2019-03-13
So why aren't wokies bashing them for deleting the refugee video?
1 FmW-41 2019-03-13
There definitely has been on their subreddit. Same with reuploads on Youtube and on /r/videos but none of the posts seem to gain that much traction. Over all the reaction from both sides hasn't been too big so I guess Kurzgesagt successfully avoided having to deal with it.
1 RollBread 2019-03-13
Because it is a stance that is near to the core to the liberal philosophy; cultural and economic enrichment through diversification.
Turns out that the entire point of the system of philosophies was to take more than one to form an opinion on something — every other governance philosophy was critical of that decisions.
1 charming_tatum 2019-03-13
Sounds like
1 FmW-41 2019-03-13
Can't have them admitting that they used biased sources on a video that was viewed +20 million times to support their insane narrative.
1 73696D756C6174696F6E 2019-03-13
Pretty much everything.
e.g. "Support for asylum seekers has mostly come from citizens, not from politicians" - That's just an insane claim. Probably has a 2-98 citizen-government ratio.
"Birth rates of the muslim population will drop quickly to native population levels" - False. They're staying significantly higher after multiple generations.
"Immigrants are "better" than natives (less crime, more job creation)" - Based on US immigration research, which has completely different immigration mechanisms compared to Europe. They also used a study of Turkish detention centers to proof that refugees commit less crime. Yeah, no shit. They're detained...
The "People are dying in the Medditerean" narrative - As it turned out, discouraging refugees from crossing a sea in shitty boats, turned out in way less deaths than encouraging them. Who would have thought?
etc.

TL;DW: Kurg rehashed some shitty TED talk into a video, another popsci sperglord tried to blast their bussy, Kurg deletes video.
1 TitansTestTeam 2019-03-13
Turns out. The episode was written by the same person who gave the TED talk.
1 grep_var_log 2019-03-13
The same person who got fired from the Independent paper in the UK for stealing work and editing Wikipedia to disparage his detractors, and his magnum opus

1 JurijFedorov 2019-03-13
The video was bullshit. It should never have been made and it's a damn shame their quality control didn't stop it. They could have gotten any good psychologist to read the script and he would tell them that the video is not factual.
1 SuperElf 2019-03-13
I'm more suprised their refugee crisis video didn't blow up as hard as the addiction one
1 Lukthar123 2019-03-13
true cultural enrichment
1 DoctorMort 2019-03-13
This is extremely petty, and not in a good way. I would be way more entertained if Kurg ended up being exposed for oversimplifying/spreading misinformation in large numbers of his videos. I'm not saying he does that, but at least it would be good for dramacoin.
1 aX10mAt1CaL1Y 2019-03-13
It’s only a matter of time before some blows a hole in their flat earth video!
1 Blasphemous_21 2019-03-13
The oversimplification of his videos is no secret. It's literally what his channel name means "in a nutshell". They pointed out their own flaws and then others point out those same flaws and act like it they got exposed. Overblown drama. Nonetheless a great channel
1 Patsy02 2019-03-13
People who cry about "oversimplification" are 99% of the time fart-huffing simpletons who don't understand abstraction.
1 dogwheiner 2019-03-13
If you think kurz videos are abstract you're a fuckin idiot
1 Patsy02 2019-03-13
It depends on the subject matter, but if you don't think e.g. this video is abstracted then you're a fuckin idiot.
1 pantyhose4 2019-03-13
Nah youre really exxagerating people are criticising Coffebreak more, kurzgesagt is gonna be fine
1 Blasphemous_21 2019-03-13
Kurgz has admitted his flaws and has been very transparent about his channel. Coffeebreak seems to have created nothing but unnecessary drama which has ultimately backfired on his face. Ironic considering he made a video on public shaming not too long ago.
1 Detective_Fallacy 2019-03-13
Do you know where you are?
1 ElonMuskarr 2019-03-13

1 Ferocetis 2019-03-13
He is so mad, they didn't 'wait' for his video. It's just so good. Can't wait for next duck video, music is what makes it.
1 allendrio 2019-03-13
They do entertaining cartoons with birds about weird science shit, why do people actually care about this?
1 mrv3 2019-03-13
Because they otherwise lack the information and care to actual research topics so quick 10 minute summaries allow people to feel smart.
1 Snowayne2 2019-03-13
People "researching" topics on their own is by far the biggest source of retardation in our times.
If you're not an expert on a topic, your opinion isn't worth shit, no matter how many "facts" you found googling that support your world view.
1 KingWayneX 2019-03-13
1 Snowayne2 2019-03-13
No, you should listen to experts and not try to "debate" people online like you know anything.
1 KingWayneX 2019-03-13
In theory, one would be googling writings by "experts". I dont disagree on the second part.
1 Tagesausbruch 2019-03-13
Ignoring everything else that happened Kurzgesagt still referenced a book and grossly misrepresented its contents, either intentionally or because they didn't read it. Both would be scientific malpractice if it had happened in an actual scientific publication, yet they did it again in their apology video. So no, you can not trust Kurzgesagt, and they just slid way down the trustworthiness scale by doing it a second time.
1 GrognakBarbar 2019-03-13
Most of the script for the addiction video was literally written by the author of the book though
1 Arkbabe 2019-03-13
Using a singular source didn't even fly when I was in high school. Essentially copy pasting the contents of that source makes it no better.
1 Hunnyhelp 2019-03-13
The entire point of Kurzgesagt is to summarize things as much as possible, they’re not a scientific publication.
1 Tagesausbruch 2019-03-13
And they spread misinformation instead of summarizing, which is the entire point of this dramatic happening.
1 UnoriginalStanger 2019-03-13
The entire point is that the dude got cucked out of his youtube bucks.
1 Hunnyhelp 2019-03-13
No, they removed that. The point of this dramatic happening is that they misinformed an investigative YouTube channel
1 HeresCyonnah 2019-03-13
They removed it after someone started asking questions about it.
1 Hunnyhelp 2019-03-13
The removal has been in process for years. It’s not easy to remove something like that. Yes, questions being asked did accelerate the process, but there was already a lot of discussion about what should be done with the video that was done in a way that isn’t consistent with how the channel does research today.
1 HeresCyonnah 2019-03-13
It's pretty easy to remove something.
What wasn't easy was planning the damage control.
That's the whole point. It's very obviously not actual transparency, but just damage control and PR.
1 Hunnyhelp 2019-03-13
Idk why full transparency is required?
1 HeresCyonnah 2019-03-13
Because they're trying to pretend they're transparent.
1 1029384756-mk2 2019-03-13
What mistake did they do again with the apology video in regards to addiction?
1 Idontknowshiit 2019-03-13
Tbh all you need to know about Kurzgesagt integrity is that they didnt delete poorly researched and misleading video because it made people feel good
1 WizardTyrone 2019-03-13
"We kept the wrong information online because it was still generating ad revenue"
1 HeresCyonnah 2019-03-13
"But then someone wanted to make a video about why we kept it up."

Holy crap. They worked on a script from Johann Hari?
Disgraced British journalist Johann Hari, kicked out for plagiarism? https://www.theguardian.com/media/2012/jan/20/johann-hari-quits-the-independent
Johann Hari, who kept removing all criticism of himself from Wikipedia?
Amusingly, the fake e-mail & name of the Wikipedia sock-puppet he edited under ('David Rose', who does not exist, but whose Wikipedia IP address came from The Independent offices where he worked; https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=methuselahproductions) also wrote gay incest erotica.
Gather round and read the only good copy Johann Hari's ever written;
"How my little brother learned to be a whore": http://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/incest/little-brother-learned-to-be-a-whore

1 EasySchmitty 2019-03-13
Easily digestible Popsci/PopEcon/PopHistory garbage ruined any discussion in those fields. They generally tend to jump to conclusions instead of fostering the outcome of people researching for themselves. Granted they sometimes make good content but other areas just fall flat on specific assumptions, like automation will destroy every job.
1 JurijFedorov 2019-03-13
When you make a video so crap that it's basically progressive propaganda you basically have to work very hard to make up for it. It will take them years to build up trust.

Coffeebreak is a massive retard for sperging out this hard, because it makes it seem like he's wrong when he does have a point.
Kurgesagt kept these videos up despite multiple people pointing out the numerous errors in them over and over. They only decided to do something after 4 years when he came around. Yeah it's not a coincidence.
That said, kurgesagt's behaviour was extremely shady, but they didn't shit the bed as hard as they could have, but it's obvious they weren't planning to give a shit about spreading misinformation if it weren't for coffee, so eh.

Kurgesagt kept these videos up despite multiple people pointing out the numerous errors in them over and over. They only decided to do something after 4 years and coincidentally just around the time he came around prodding them. Yeah it's not a coincidence.

It’s really fucking annoying that people care that a channel who makes high quality content deletes a video because someone points out the facts are wrong. great. That’s why the video is deleted. Just hop the fuck off of kurzgesagt, they make legitimately good videos compared to the rest of the horrible, god awful platform that is YouTube.
1 Baumhippo 2019-03-13
I still try to understand what's going on here, but I love Kurzgesagt from all of my heart (yet I haven't seen said video)... they brought so much joy to my depressed heart, although I spot some clearly too liberal opinions for my taste, but I can't remember where exactly that was. Probably just background symbolism.

Those videos are super tasty, greatly done, and so informative... wow, I would have LOVED these videos when I was a kid as much as I loved the german education videos on TV, you know, the expensiver ones... talking about "Die Sendung mit der Maus", "Quarks & Co" ...

AH, ME!

please don't let Kurzgesagt die because of such a bullshit. They admitting their mistake shows great character.
And also, who cares about addicts anyway. They're responsible for their own actions.
1 Koniko5231 2019-03-13
For sure, you are better at words that I am sir
