Its suprising to a certain amount how much flak Pewdiepie is getting for this, but I guess to a certain extent since 'remember lads, subscribe to Pewdiepie' portion comes before any real violence starts it may be the only bit that is able to be shown or discussed. If one watches the entire video though he was clearly scattering memes, both right wing and general, throughout his entire rampage. Things like playing 'Gas Gas Gas' while he is driving away or how in his manifesto he wrote the navy seal copypasta, both more general widespread memes. Then the more right wing exclusive memes like some of the phrases he wrote on his gun and a fairly popular alt-right Nazi remix song played before he left the primary location. It seems far more likely that 'subscribe to pewdiepie' was just another meme he spouted while he was commiting the atrocity as an agent of chaos trying to accelerate the social unrest and it would make no sense in this case to say Felix having slightly right of center opinions had very much if any influence on this individual who was a user of 4chan and showed a deliberate hatred of Muslims that lines up far better with a /pol/ style of thought.
I would like though to make it very clear I am NOT saying the Felix was a victim of the atrocity, he was in now way, shape, or form hurt by the events anywhere near as bad as almost anyone else involved. I actually would say that anyone focusing this atrocity on him in any form is doing a disservice to the innocents lost, but the amount of opinions focusing on blaming Pewdiepie need critiqued because its a reactionary conclusion to reach.
After consuming as much material on this shooting as possible and reading his manifesto it is very clear that he is both alt-right and a racist who commited this shooting because he believed in the myth of 'white replacement' that is pushed by neo-Nazis and race realists alike; but it is also very hard to tell where his true opinions stop and his joking begins. He clearly describes in his manifesto that another reason for this shooting was to sow chaos and accelerate what he saw as a divide between the right and the left, especially in America which he mentioned multiple times. I think that one big reason he threw so many popular memes and referances into his act is that he wants a reactionary movement to start on the left that would declare all these types of jokes or memes neo-Nazi dogwhistles and his hope was that this would further alienate the left and push more people to the right.
