Theyre illegal in the US for some reason. Id remember but it was 3 mile island that pushed the legislation through i think. Basically we cant build breeder reactors in the US which would bring radioactive waste levels down to nearly nothing. .2% of total waste, and only for about 50 years. Its downside is needing Uranium deposits but its way better than coal.

Actually we should be able to use thorium which is significantly more plentiful in msr reactors. I dont think it was ever outlawed, they had a working test bed in the sixties. Uranium proved to be more efficient thus we went with that option and basically forgot about thorium again until recently

The correct term is spent fuel. Look up what France does with its nuclear cycle. Spent Fuel is recycled and the very minimal long lived by byproducts are turned into glass and can be safely stored in a building smaller than a gymnasium.
