Actual for realsy-reals lawyer/lobbyist allegedly violates NDA to gain internet spaceship money in EVE Online, threatens legal action, community dabs to the beat of the drama
287 2019-04-09 by StingAuer
EVE Online has an elected council called the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), which serves to consult CCP (Icelandic spaceship videogame company) on how potential changes to the game may affect the playerbase.
User Brisc Rubal, real name Brian Schoeneman, is a Maritime Law Lobbyist in the United States of America, as per his CSM Campaign Video ( I shit you not )
additionally, PCGamer article on the event
As part of the CSM, he had to sign an NDA, because of the insider information he gains access to from CCP directly.
Brisc Rubal, AKA Brian Schoeneman, has been permanently banned from EVE and ejected from the CSM, as he has allegedly violated this NDA.
Official CCP announcement of his ban: https://www.eveonline.com/article/ppne2z/brisc-rubal-removed-from-the-csm-13?origin=launcher
Allegedly, he told one of his alliance buddies that a certain expensive and powerful ship was getting nerfed, so that the buddy could sell the ship at the existing price instead of the reduced post-nerf price.
Basically, it's insider trading, but dumber, with fake money and real consequences.
Why does this have real-life ramifications? You see, being a lawyer, Brisc/Brian must report any and all instances of contract violations he is involved in (and other such matters) to his State BAR Association. This, naturally, puts him at risk of being investigated and disbarred, among other legal consequences.
Brisc/Brian has made a public statement denying the allegations on /r/EVE https://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/bazjd6/official_statement_of_brisc_rubal_on_removal_and/
I will update this thread, or post additional threads, as more information comes forward and the situation develops.

Drama posting as a whole rots your brain, the sub is easily one of the most transphobic subreddits filled with Enlightened centrists and alt-light trolls, the mod team is a bunch of weirdo nominally left succdems who post on Stupidpol about how they're the bastion of left thought.
One of them made a post about how they used to be a SJW but alienated all their friends and family and now decries idpol, when in reality they're probably just insufferable to be around

Yeah, but when we get video game lawyers for Second Life so I finally get a divorce from my three cocked wife?

Why??? Did you find a four cocked one?
1 AlveolarPressure 2019-04-09
Holy shit this is juicy. It takes a special brand of smoothbrain to so closely link your irl lawyer/lobbyist persona to your vidya persona.
Also lol @ including his 5 seconds as a talking head on FOX in his campaign video for space vidya
1 rentalong 2019-04-09
He just wanted to throw around his lawyer clout so he could be a fake space senator. Which is hilarious because now the dude has real life negative press from being a fake space senator

Imagine potentially ruining your career as a lawyer to help your buddy in a videogame. Gameshit not even once.

Less than 5% of reddit is basketball americans, so statistically...
1 Sea_Safe 2019-04-09
to add a little bit to this, the amount of gain from something like this could be anywhere like 20 billion isk? and 20 billion isk is worth something like $250, which is probably two hours or less at this guy's job. all of his accounts got banned, which are worth thousands of hours of playtime, and probably thousands of dollars. so he lost: thousands of $, thousands of hours, put his reputation/job at risk... in order to earn his buddy a couple hundred bucks. excellent risk/reward on this transaction.
1 Redactor0 2019-04-09
Omg you actually know the ISK to USD exchange rate off the top of your head. Nerd alert! 😂😂😂
1 Sea_Safe 2019-04-09
the game devs themselves sell ISK so its not that complicated. $20 gets you about 2 bill isk

I only played briefly years ago, but I was fascinated by the way that they bring real world money into the game's economy. The typical MMO model seems to be to have lots of free to play players to make sure there's a big population but then rely on the small percentage of whales who buy cosmetics.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will have real consequences, because nobody cares about the 36th chamber of hyper 'tism that is EVE Online and state bar association s have better things to do than concern themselves with lawyers playing pretend spaceship games.

1 FlexualHealing 2019-04-09
EVE Online continues to spill into RL drama for what 15 years now?
1 ResIpsaBroquitur 2019-04-09
lolno.
First of all, you don't have to report breaches of contract to the bar. At most, you have to report yourself if you're convicted of a crime (typically just felonies and crimes involving moral turpitude), or if you're disciplined by another state bar.
Beyond that, I've never heard of anyone getting disbarred for breaching a personal contract on one occasion. I would expect that to be a public reprimand, at most. You have to do something really dumb to get disbarred -- like stealing money from a client trust account. Being an r-slur g-slur isn't enough.
1 StingAuer 2019-04-09
violating an NDA is a big deal
1 Che_Gueporna 2019-04-09
It's really not.
1 Che_Gueporna 2019-04-09
Eh, sex stuff will get you disbarred too.
Heard about some idiot who got disbarred for advertising a job posting for a combination secretary/mistress. For himself AND his law partner.
1 ResIpsaBroquitur 2019-04-09
Yeah — like I said, you have to do something pretty dumb. Sex stuff can definitely do it. Some of the best disbarments I’ve heard about:

Lol imagine destroying your career over a video game.
Hm on second thought that is probably pretty common.
1 Casmeron 2019-04-09
Ok if this is actually what happened can you tell me specifically where it was mentioned? There's been a lot of chatter about what he might have leaked & I'm interested in seeing how petty it was. (Rorqs went down in value like 1-1.5b depending on fit so unless shines offloaded a massive armada of 'em, this didn't save much time at all. I don't think either him or pando had a krab super.)
1 Kalvthe 2019-04-09
There was another person involved and the leak supposedly went like this: Spaceshit Lawyer -> Group member -> Group member who profited. Tried reading up on it a bit, but it's kind of weird that nobody knows the name of the third player. Unless I skipped over it thinking it was some Eve jargon.
1 Casmeron 2019-04-09
Man you're like 12 whole hours behind on the breaking news! Persons 2 and 3 are pando and dark shines. Not sure in which order though
1 Lysis10 2019-04-09
