In the deep rural mid to southern apps, it doesn't really matter what color, age, gender or creed someone is, if you step foot in a place you're not expected or wanted you're likely to find yourself staring down the business end of a shotgun. You'd better be able to explain yourself real quick.
In the other "deep south", then yeah, race has a lot more to do with it.
