It's both, you walnut. Gendered behavior follows from the biological nature of the sexes they're attached to. That does not mean gender roles are determined by biology, just that they're influenced by it. And there's more commonalities between gender roles between societies than differences: (male disposability and adventerousness is a near constant)

Sure, but if someone with a penis says they identify as a woman, I think the best response is "cool." It's really not difficult to use different pronouns for someone if they ask. Refusing to do things like that is just dying on the wrong hill. Imagine if someone was a man and referred to themselves as a man but also had long hair and a soft face and you accidentally called them "she." If they corrected you, you'd be like "oh shit, my bad." If you refuse to do that for someone whose biological gender doesn't match their preferred identity, you're really just fixating on what's in their pants to a creepy degree.

Biology might influence gender norms in general, but there are individuals who feel most comfortable not only exhibiting some behaviors of the gender that doesn't match their sex, but rather identifying as and being treated as that gender. I'm chill with that, and I think any decent person would be chill with that. I don't understand why anyone would make a fuss about that other than to draw attention to themselves.

My response to trans people has always been to play along with their shtick. If they ask me to call them “she” or “he”, I’ll do it, but really only out of politeness and unwillingness to get in a row over trans identity with some stranger. In my personal thoughts, they are categorically different than the biological sex they are imitating.

It’s not hard to understand. The idea is that most of the behaviors we consider to be “masculine” are really just widespread beliefs we all learned as children. It’s just part of culture, and the specific behaviors vary across different cultures. So while having a penis = genetically male, the other stuff that we call “being a boy” is largely determined by upbringing rather than genetics.

When someone deviates from that, most people react poorly because they’re deviating from a sacred social norm. It’s getting a little better in some countries. Someone who is obviously male but acting like a woman and wearing feminine clothes probably isn’t even enough to get a second glance in a major American city. If that kind of person says they identify as a woman, they’re not denying the fact that they have a penis. They’re simply making a statement about the set of behaviors they feel most comfortable with. They’re saying that the concept of a woman is more than just “human with vagina” because people have lots and lots of shared beliefs about how women act and dress and speak, etc.

If you get torn up about how they describe that, you’re really just getting torn up about the semantics. The only important point is that social behavior is not bound by genitals. If you agree with that, you agree with them on everything important and you just don’t like the words they’re using. It’s a little boring to get bent out of shape about the words someone uses because language is also a shared construct that changes according to what people want to use it for.

In short social gender norms are not something real, innate, but instead something cultural, a social construct therefore. As thus anyone can adhere to the opposite sex gender norm, which would make one culturally speaking a woman/man.
