This reminds me of an epic story from an old naturalist book. Dude is a game ranger/safari coordinator from BritBongistan and gets into a fight with a medicine man. Medicine man says he released magic lions that will ravage villages until he is granted more authority. Limey tries to assure villagers, kills an assload of lions, but they are unconvinced.

Like 2 years later he kills some actual man eaters (they didn’t have cars and shit then) and goes to rub it in medicine man’s face; he figured the old man was capitalizing on there being some man eaters to seize power. He tells him he killed the lions and the medicine man says: “it doesn’t matter. I was given the role of elder by all the villages a year ago”.
