Just to play devil's advocate kid, there is such a thing as a legit alcoholic that would physically die if they stop drinking as they will get a seizure. In such a case abortion should be mandatory, thankfully, getting pregnant and not miscarrying in such a physical state is not usually possible. You can't tell pregnant women to drink different amounts of alcohol just to see what happens. You're pretty much stuck using surveys to ask mothers how much they drank (like this study), and survey data is inherently less reliable than experimental data. The bottom line is that small amounts of drinking while pregnant will probably not cause any issues, but you're gambling with your baby's life if you do.

Just to play devil's advocate kid, there is such a thing as a legit alcoholic that would physically die if they stop drinking as they will get a seizure. There is a non-zero amount of alcohol consumption during pregnancy that isn't harmful, but we don't know what that amount is because there's no ethical way to test for it. You can't tell pregnant women to drink different amounts of alcohol just to see what happens. You're pretty much stuck using surveys to ask mothers how much they drank (like this study), and survey data is inherently less reliable than experimental data. The bottom line is that small amounts of drinking while pregnant will probably not cause any issues, but you're gambling with your baby's life if you do.
So what happens is some desperate freelancer who dropped out of pre-med gets paid $14 to write a Cracked article about how, actually, a beer every now and then is probably no big deal, and suddenly every childless 19 year old dude on Reddit is an expert on prenatal health care.

I deal with a lot of FASD kids and their families in my line of work. The amount of people (not just mothers) who think that a glass of wine or two doesn't hurt is staggering. I mean, I've had doctors say that. It was something that was "common wisdom" a few decades back.
