Lauren Southern seems to take care not to go explicitly white nationalist, walk on that knife edge between just barely respectable 'civic nationalists' and the alt right that started popping up after Charlottesville. Before Charlottesville I swear the environment was such that you couldn't go too far to the right, the real danger was hedging and then receiving the dreaded 'cuck' label. While the territory further to the right you could always just walk back if necessary saying you were jus joking. After Charlottesville things kind of divided between the 'Nazis' like Richard Spencer who became totally stigmatized. Somehow they thought that if they dressed right they could do the nazi salute. I think a lot of otherwise normal, boring dressing dudes woke up that day, looked at those lines of boring ass normal looking white dude carrying torches and doing the nazi salute, and cringed hard. Those guy's were just too embarrassing, they made boring ass white dudes look really bad. People in this group pretty much got banned from every platform imaginable and have little following now. Some largely opportunistic 'jokesters' got caught up in this shit too, like Milo and Baked Alaska.
Then there were the more 'respectable' intelligent nationalists, like Sargon of Akkad, Stephen Monyleux, and Ben Shapiro. How smart they actually are is anther question but they definitely market themselves from the intellectual angle. Most of them did the unthinkable, punched right and denounced the alt right. Shapiro had even been a goddamn Never Trumper, tbh he's shit but he's probably still somehow the least shit out of that entire group, and the only one to manage to crawl his way out of the NYT op ed column ghetto most of them now live in and back into relevance.
I don't really think of him as part of the nationalist camp, but Jordan Person came into the fore in this period and gained a tremendous following among young right wingers, he was like the perfect figure for it, he had the education and academic credentials to prove that he was a 'serious' smart person and was able to eloquently express some of those right wing ideas young right wingers had been thinking but really wanted a 'smart' person to back them up on. And he combined it with some self help stuff cus, goddamn, a lot of these dudes really need some help. Of course he wasn't really a fire breathing right winger, many clueless people on the left wildly misinterpreted him at first and immediately through the 'alt right' label on him. Which made them look retarded.
Anyway, if you want to make money as a right winger, this is the sweet spot. Just far right enough to not be a cuck who loves white genocide, not far right enough that your family disowns you and your patreon gets the ban hammer. So that's where Lauren wound up of course.
