Nah, you can get a starter rod and tackle probably around 50 bucks. Only other thing you would need to start is a nice fishers knife.

Best way to learn is to tag along with any friends or family that do. It really is one of those passed down bits of knowledge.

If you don't know anyone, there are plenty of tutorials online now. So, figure out what kind of fish are in your area and how to fish them in the type of body of water.

Very relaxing and rewarding hobby if you enjoy nature.

southern Ontario, I sort of rotate between the three major trout rivers around here (The Credit, The Grand, and the Humber.) I'm also a member of a private fly fishing club that stocks it's lake/ponds with rainbow and brook trout.

Oh cool, those rivers look beautiful, I was actually just reading about restocking programs as trout aren't native here. I've only saltwater fished until recently and didn't even know there was trout near by, the only other freshwater fish I've caught are redfin perch and bream.
