Cornu aspersum was introduced to California in the 1850's as a food animal, and has since become a part of the ecosystem. They originated in north Africa and the Mediterranean, and have adapted to many temperate climates around the globe, spread by humans intending to farm them.

In Europe, they are eaten as escargot, and farmed commercially as well as foraged.
