A few weeks ago, a guy by the name of Etika discovered the YouTube channel FitMC, which documents the anarchy Minecraft server 2b2t and is run by an established player, infamous for attracting new players to the server, whose username is Fit. With the encouragement of his viewers, he played on the server. He had very little success, owing to being targeted by the 2b2t experience and his lack of experience with the game (for example, he was too scared to use tools and armor with the “curse of vanishing” enchantment). Etika’s stream of the server led to a flood of new players into the server unseen since TheCampingRusher’s infamous and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to take over the server; the queue reached 1,7000 people. This naturally angered the community even more, and established players began forming groups dedicated to the elimination of Etika and his fans.

Fit, despite previously being the self-appointed veteran leader during the Rusher war, announced his support for Etika, saying he felt that the community’s treatment of him was “unfair”. Invigorated by this, Etika issued an “ultimatum” to 2b2t to surrender the server and give him free reign for a period of two weeks for his enjoyment and then be left alone, or face invasion and occupation for the entire summer. When this demand was rejected, Etika proclaimed a decentralized “faction” known as the 9Gang (so named for its members’ custom of spamming “9” in the chat repeatedly), whose members are known as the “Joycon Boyz” and are almost exclusively Etika fans with no prior history on the server. Etika then issued a declaration of war on 2b2t, with the aim of establishing the 9Gang as the dominant power on the server.

Etika continued to stream his escapades on the server, obscuring the game only when he checked his coordinates. Of course, the sighting of landmarks allowed old players to locate and kill him with ease repeatedly. The Joycon Boyz who managed to make it past the queue followed in his footsteps, destroying ancient landmarks, some literally almost a decade old, for their own amusement, obviously incensing the community’s even more. Eventually, after being killed by a player with the invisibility potion effect, (which Etika blamed on “hacking”), he decided to no longer stream the server, while continuing to play on it with the ultimate aim of conquest.

Initially, the veteran players didn’t have any trouble whatsoever eliminating the Joycon Boyz at spawn who hadn’t starved to death or killed each other. However, Fit has begun handing out free armor and weaponry to them so that they can defend themselves, escape spawn, and meet with Etika. To make matters worse, AntVenom, last year caused the server to be flooded with his fans (or “ants”), though without the intention of taking over, is planning on making yet another video on 2b2t later this summer, which we will effectively force the veterans to fight against two forces simultaneously. In response, they have formed the purge and open warfare has begun at the server spawn.

Steve Huffman: Compensation, well... A few steps down the road what I would like to do is when I say empower communities, I think there’s an extreme version of that, which is where we bring economics into this. Allowing communities to have business models. And hopefully you can use your imagination there, but I think there’s a lot they can do and that would open the door to communities having money and potentially moderators having a share of that. So I think we’re pretty far off, but that’s one of my, kind of, fantasies, that we can elevate communities to such a degree that people can actually run a business or earn a living on Reddit.
