Study chemical engineering undergrad. Get a high GPA with good extra curriculars(engineering projects like Chem-E-Car). Get an internship or co-op at a pharma company. Repeat until graduatoong and you have a biotech offer for full time. You will be working on process engineering and efficiency gains rather than designing new drugs but in the end a cure for cancer that costs 3 billion per patient is worthless while a vaccine for measles that costs fractions of a cent per dose is priceless.

iirc at least some biotech companies give researchers some degree of time/resources to work on pet projects so you'd probably end up doing more research that you actually want to do than you would in academia anyway
