Honestly it's been so long since the last book came out I genuinely don't care about ASOIAF anymore. I read the entire Black Company series in the meantime and am currently reading The Book of the New Sun.

I liked Black Company more. The protagonists are a mercenary and a dictator and it still manages to be less edgy than Asoiaf.

Yeah, but he didn't get really insufferable until after Iron Council. Then he stopped writing anything decent and became absurdly over the top preachy. Hell, one can interpret Iron Council as being about c*mmunisms inevitable failure.

I'm primarily referring to the first three Bas-Lag yeah. I can also compartmentalize pretty well, and it didn't detract from the writing, worldbuilding and characters to the point it harmed those books (in my opinion anyway). It didn't commit the unforgivable crime of slipping over the line into didactic fiction - which is a frequent offense of L-sided P-slur writers.

Never touched The City and the City, so I can't comment there.
