Discord is a malignant tumor on this disease of a subreddit (and in general); partaking in it makes people more miserable and it causes problems that bleed into the sub. I haven't seen a single active discord community outside of purely functional ones that isn't a massive dumpster fire that lowers everyone's quality of life. I mean, just think about it:

• post-based low-involvement community gets real-time discussion spinoff
• only appeals to people who are really invested in the community, inherently creates larger distinction between regulars and casuals
• a ton of time and effort is required to keep up with what's happening in the community and even participate in any meaningful way; now the regulars with the most time on their hands and/or the biggest passion (lol) for the community have the biggest social influence and highest social standing (lol)
• oftentimes the people with the most time on their hands are also unstable, meaning that unstable people have now taken over the community
• instead of a couple of mods and a bunch of members on equal footing people get an array of special permissions as decided by the mods
• people with the right permissions can create their own exclusive hang-outs within the spinoff community
• drama erupts over cliques that have formed as a result of the disparities in activity, exclusive hang-outs, and permissions in addition to the drama that would normally occur in communities where people get to know each other
• disparities in activity, permissions, exclusive groups etc. all influence each other
• drama is amplified by instability of the regulars and their amount of emotional investment in the community - horrible relationships form and explode, people gather blackmail, people conspire against each other and gossip constantly
• eventually an admin gets caught up in a drama of the month and nukes the server or a disgraced regular gets it shut down out of spite
• a new server is created and the cycle begins anew

I used to participate in various discord channels until I realized it was filled with mentally ill people and weirdos (like furries, trannies, and pedophiles). There's just something weird about the platform that attracts all the freaks (probably because you need to be un or underemployed to stay up to date with everything). Feels like a shady back alley. And I'm too much of a respectable gentleman to frequent such lowly haunts.

It's similar to IRC in that respect (and many others), but somehow even more poisonous, and people get even more emotionally involved. Not sure why, maybe it's the difference in demographics or something
