The menstrual cycle can be a bit hard to explain bc some things happen at once. Also I'm not native English speaker, so forgive me if some terms are translated wrong.

Since it's a cycle you can start the explanation from anywhere, we're choosing the Follicular Phase.

Follicular Phase: In your hypothalamus in your brain GnRH (Gonadotroping Releasing Hormone) is secreted. This hormone travels to your anterior (front) pituitary. Here it says "Keep doing your thing!!", so the anterior pituitary will release FSH and LH that will travel to the ovaries. This is the first axis of the first picture. As you can see in the second picture, then FSH and LH levels are pretty stable until about the last bit, this we can call the cycle "midpoint".

FSH makes granulosa cells in the ovary produce estrogen. LH makes theca cells produce androgens, most of which are made to estrogen.

The estrogen made works as a negative feedback. This means that estrogen lessens the amount of GnRH released. This way the level will be stable. (On the first picture you can see it, estradiol is a type of estrogen.)

As you might've noticed the estrogen levels rise before the LH and FSH levels in the 2nd picture. This is because the granulosa cells and theca cells in the ovary (the cells that produce the estrogen) get more receptors that FSH and LH can work on during the follicular phase. The hormones cannot work without a receptor to bind to.

During this time several follicles in your ovary ("pre-eggs") have been undergoing maturation. Towards the end of the follicular phase the dominant one is selected (the one with most FSH receptors).

Midcycle/ovulation: It's finally time to releases the Kraken, y'all! Aka the egg. Midcycle a switch suddenly flips that we still don't quite understand. Instead of estrogen making negative feedback, it switches to positive feedforward.

This means that estrogen encourages more GnRH secretion, and GnRH increases FSH and LH, which means more estrogen, and more estrogen again means more GnRH... As you can see in the 2nd picture, hormone levels EXPLODE. This makes ovulation happen. An egg is released from the follicle.

After ovulation the hormone levels fall again.

Luteal phase: The abandoned follice becomes the corpus luteum, this secretes progesteron. Progestreon inhibits relase of GnRH, and thereby FSH and LH, and estrogen.

Some of the progesteron is turned intro estrogen/estradiol. That's why we see a fall in estrogen after ovulation, but also a small rise after.

LH keeps the corpus luteum (the abandoned follicle) alive, so that it keeps producing progesteron.

Here's where the story divides: 1) the egg has been fertilized and LH levels will stay up for a while yet, or 2) the egg has not been fertilized and LH levels will fall, this makes the corpus luteum "die" so it turns into corpus albicans. When the corpus luteum dies progestron and estrogen levels fall.

We've turned back to a negative feedback situation in the luteal phase. So since there is hardly any estrogen to inhibit, the GnRH levels will rise again (and LH and FSH). This brings back some more estrogen.

We are now ready to start over!

So where the frick does testosterone feature in all this?? Well, when estrogen is made you start with cholesterol. This must be turned into other things through stages. I won't bore you with all because they are many. But it is eventually turned into androstenedione. Androstenedione is turned into testosterone or estrogen. Testosterone can be turned into estrogen.

All this takes placed in the theca and grunalosa cells in the ovary. So yeah, when during the cycle production of estrogen increases, that will also increase the testosterone produced. Buuuuut a lot of it is turned back into estrogen so the "most like a man" thing in the post... ehh, debatable.

We know that women with very high levels of testosterone can have irregular or no menstruation at all.

Follicular phase: there is cell proliferation, meaning they are dividing and making many more. This makes the uterine lining steadily grow.

Luteal phase: differentiation of the lining increases. This, among other things, is to make the uterine lining more "sticky", so that a fertilized egg will have an easier time.
