Because I don't know precisely how little you know about Marxist theory (I'm assuming virtually nothing) we are going to start with some basic ass terms. This is gonna be simplified as fuck because you're an internet communist, therefore you genuinely don't know anything about your self-professed ideology and need kind-hearted neoliberals like me to explain it for you.
Means of production: things that are used to produce goods and services (farmland, minerals, tools, machines)
Relations of production: How you relate to the means of production, typically divided into bourgeoisie (owns means of production) and proletariat (works for the bourgeoisie)
Base: A society's means of production and relations of production. The base DETERMINES the superstructure
Superstructure: Art, culture, family structure, politics, legal systems the superstructure INFLUENCES but CANNOT DETERMINE the base. The superstructure will ALWAYS be subordinate to the base
The base and superstructure are probably the two most important aspect of Marxism. We're keeping shit simple here so we won't go over shit like historical materialism and dialectics, but suffice to say history has a pattern where the material conditions of society (the base) gets to the point where the class that controls the base is overthrown by the class below them. Marxism posits that the final overthrow of capitalism will be the proletariat overthrowing the bourgeoisie. The Chinese Communist Party had intended on overthrowing the bourgeoisie (in fact, it meant to do it twice, once through their actual revolution and again through the cultural revolution, which was intended to remove lingering bourgeois thoughts and feelings from the society) and you can argue they sort of succeeded. Kind of.
The problem was the Dengist reforms that reintroduced capitalist elements to the society, and those elements have expanded greatly since. You can point out that the economy is still largely state-dominated/influenced, that they are just doing a neo-NEP policy to increase their means of production, that they sometimes prosecute/kill billionaires, etc.
The problem is that you CANNOT reject the fact that the RELATIONS OF PRODUCTION HAVE NOW BECOME CAPITALIST IN NATURE. This is ESSENTIAL for a Marxist analysis of contemporary China. It doesn't matter if the state owns the means of production if wage labor (and thus exploitation of workers) is still how workers relate to the means of production, as per Engels himself.
This is why China cannot be Marxist from a Marxist perspective, China has a capitalist relation to production and, by extension, a capitalist base. Base determines superstructure which means that if you have a capitalist base it will determine your superstructure. Since your superstructure includes your political system than it is impossible to have a capitalist base and proletarian political system as capitalist bases produce capitalist political institutions.
This is what Lenin and Stalin understood. There is a reason the NEP was a temporary retreat from socialism and it is the same reason that Stalin was unrelentingly cruel when smashing what he considered Kulaks: the NEP was a temporary reintroduction of a capitalist relation to production in the countryside. Since it was limited to only a certain part of the country it could temporarily exist and not threaten the socialist relations of production in the cities, but if they allowed it to exist for too long it would end in a capitalist counter-revolution because the base determines the superstructure. Stalin had to remove what capitalist elements that existed within the total base of the USSR with such severity because he needed to ensure it could never reemerge.
Now China has made NEP look like a kid selling lemonade on the street corner in terms of the scale of reintroducing capitalist relations of production into their economy and you are now trying to argue that they are still a proletarian state because you've never fucking read theory.

OK, so this is actually where it gets difficult because I'm about to do something so anathema to internet communists that it may make you finally join the 40% once and for all: we're gonna talk THEORY 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Because I don't know precisely how little you know about Marxist theory (I'm assuming virtually nothing) we are going to start with some basic ass terms. This is gonna be simplified as fuck because you're an internet communist, therefore you genuinely don't know anything about your self-professed ideology and need kind-hearted neoliberals like me to explain it for you.
Means of production: things that are used to produce goods and services (farmland, minerals, tools, machines)
Relations of production: How you relate to the means of production, typically divided into bourgeoisie (owns means of production) and proletariat (works for the bourgeoisie)
Base: A society's means of production and relations of production. The base DETERMINES the superstructure
Superstructure: Art, culture, family structure, politics, legal systems the superstructure INFLUENCES but CANNOT DETERMINE the base. The superstructure will ALWAYS be subordinate to the base
The base and superstructure are probably the two most important aspect of Marxism. We're keeping shit simple here so we won't go over shit like historical materialism and dialectics, but suffice to say history has a pattern where the material conditions of society (the base) gets to the point where the class that controls the base is overthrown by the class below them. Marxism posits that the final overthrow of capitalism will be the proletariat overthrowing the bourgeoisie. The Chinese Communist Party had intended on overthrowing the bourgeoisie (in fact, it meant to do it twice, once through their actual revolution and again through the cultural revolution, which was intended to remove lingering bourgeois thoughts and feelings from the society) and you can argue they sort of succeeded. Kind of.
The problem was the Dengist reforms that reintroduced capitalist elements to the society, and those elements have expanded greatly since. You can point out that the economy is still largely state-dominated/influenced, that they are just doing a neo-NEP policy to increase their means of production, that they sometimes prosecute/kill billionaires, etc.
The problem is that you CANNOT reject the fact that the RELATIONS OF PRODUCTION HAVE NOW BECOME CAPITALIST IN NATURE. This is ESSENTIAL for a Marxist analysis of contemporary China. It doesn't matter if the state owns the means of production if wage labor (and thus exploitation of workers) is still how workers relate to the means of production, as per Engels himself.
This is why China cannot be Marxist from a Marxist perspective, China has a capitalist relation to production and, by extension, a capitalist base. Base determines superstructure which means that if you have a capitalist base it will determine your superstructure. Since your superstructure includes your political system than it is impossible to have a capitalist base and proletarian political system as capitalist bases produce capitalist political institutions.
This is what Lenin and Stalin understood. There is a reason the NEP was a temporary retreat from socialism and it is the same reason that Stalin was unrelentingly cruel when smashing what he considered Kulaks: the NEP was a temporary reintroduction of a capitalist relation to production in the countryside. Since it was limited to only a certain part of the country it could temporarily exist and not threaten the socialist relations of production in the cities, but if they allowed it to exist for too long it would end in a capitalist counter-revolution because the base determines the superstructure. Stalin had to remove what capitalist elements that existed within the total base of the USSR with such severity because he needed to ensure it could never reemerge.
Now China has made NEP look like a kid selling lemonade on the street corner in terms of the scale of reintroducing capitalist relations of production into their economy and you are now trying to argue that they are still a proletarian state because you've never fucking read theory.
