I've spent a lot of time on anime/fansubbing/gaming/programming IRCs, and I'm pretty sure that the problem is that Discord seamlessly combines the irc nonstop shitposting with a built-in imagehost and voice server. Before the IRC crowd was the sort of "normal" part and most of the people in the channel could opt-out of the degenerate drama of the mumble/ventrillo server that eventually turned into homoerotic flirting and skype cyber sessions. Also, people had to put in the slightest bit of effort to send images, and even if they did, everyone else had to click on them to see them. In Discord, it's so easy, and everyone is forced to see the preview, so people that are starved for attention are much more likely to spam out their lol so random feeling cute today uwu shit.
Either that, or it's all a Chinese PsyOp to get Westerners weak.
You can trace back a lot of the most vile memes and most toxic communities to League of Legends, which was the pinnacle of community standards until it went from Bay Area owners to Chinese ones.
