Alexis Kennedy is a prominent British game developer, one of the founders of Failbetter Games ("Fallen London", "Sunless Sea"), before he went on to found his own studio, Weather Factory, which published "Cultist Simulator" last year.

In the wake of recent revelations of sexual abuse and harassment in the gaming industry, an anonymous Twitter account operating under the name @AbuseIndustry (already gone again) began to publish the first rumours about Kennedy abusing women whom he had been mentoring in his role as a prominent game dev.

The rumours lacked substantiation, but now kicked off an avalance of revelations about Kennedy's abusive behavior.

The first one to come forward with personal experiences about Kennedy was Meg Jayanth, herself a prominent game dev and writer on games such as "80 Days" and "Falcon Age". She revealed in a Twitter thread:

An anon account has been naming abusers in the games industry. Alexis Kennedy is one of them. I can't speak to the motives of the anon, but Alexis is a well-known predator in the games industry. I have been warning people about him for years.

If you have not heard this before it is because Alexis Kennedy has retaliated against people who have spoken out against him in the past, and many he has harmed the most are rightly afraid to come forward. He has frightened and threatened a lot of women into silence.

[...]Alexis Kennedy has a pattern of "befriending" young women who are entering the industry and then crosses professional boundaries with them. This is exploitative. I know this now because he did this to me, when I approached him as a young woman looking for career advice + work.

This is not "serial dating". This is a pattern of abuse perpetrated by an older man who uses his professional, financial and social power to exploit women sexually + professionally. He has threatened many women with retaliation to ensure silence + compliance.

One game dev who found herself as a victim of Kennedy's abusive behavior, Olivia Wood, working as an editor for Failbetter Games, came forward with her experiences:

I was in a relationship with Alexis Kennedy for nearly two years. He was my line manager the entire time. It was kept a secret from the whole company, including the board.

During our relationship he cheated on me with people brought to company events, and who were wanting to work with the company. He broke up with me by messaging me that he'd cheated on me with a colleague (also his direct report) at the office Halloween party.

I had to request he stop being my line-manager afterwards, though even then he was my manager's manager, and CEO. His attitude towards me and my work changed the moment I was no longer his partner.

I was shouted at and sworn at in front of colleagues; I was given opportunities – only to have my work belittled. I was kept anxious and uncertain. I was made to feel that my only recourse was to leave the company, but...

that I would not be able to get work anywhere else in the industry. I had to work alongside Alexis and that colleague till he left, and then her till she left. I made nice and pretended it wasn't awful as best I could, because even once he was no longer my line-manager,...

he was still the CEO and had (I thought) my career in his hands. He had always seemed popular and powerful in the industry, and I feared he could get me blackballed.

Several other prominent women from the British game dev scene have confirmed that Kennedy had been known as an abuser within the industry, among them Rhianna Pratchett and Leigh Alexander.

Kennedy's own response to the revelations have not only been unapologetic, but outright threatening the women who have come forward:

I deny this. I have had a small number of fully consensual relationships with other people in the industry. Everything else here is a malicious misrepresentation. I have taken legal advice and I am making a police complaint about what seems to be a campaign of harassment.
