Its far from the worse thing about our justice system anyway. Like we have insane mandatory minimums in place just to pressure people into a plea deal to get a same sentence. Which heavily biases things in favor of the prosecutor even for innocent people. You're basically at the prosecutors mercy and have to play a game of weighing a reasonable time in jail in a plea VS the prosecutor managing to string together a case and put you in prison for a sentence wildly disproportionate to the crime. It's a huge benefit when going after criminals of course, but so would be just doing away with trials and letting the prosecutor imprison who they want. You're putting a lot of faith in that prosecutor.
It doesn't help that putting innocent clients in prison is just as big of a boon to a prosecutors career as putting guilty ones away. It's more statistics on their resume. They just want to close the case a lot of the time, they don't care if they get the right guy. Combine that with almost comical deference to prosecutors on the part of typical American juries and you've got a poisonous combination. Like literally a lot of times juries put away people they don't actually think committed the crime just because they think they look like they're a criminal anyway and will be back in the system.
And a bunch of just god awful laws from the 80s and 90s when the democrats and Republicans got into a stupid arms race trying to prove who was more tough on crime.
