Excuse me but the educational system that serves 80,000+ students is more impactful than the couple hundred alcoholic pollacks that fight to make their work as inefficient as humanly possible. Also the rise and fall of Carcetti was an incredible storytelling arc.
Imagine being some antisocial element that wants to homeschool their kids in the ways of Unintelligent Design while many thousands - millions - of children never become literate.
Ensuring that the next generation has a baseline of competency is key for the functioning of a civilization. Even the asshole New England puritans understood this - universal public education is a cornerstone of America and if you don’t like it you can get the fuck out loser.
On one hand tats a pretty awful thing to do, but on the other hand my home state was a shithole before the ILWU, and probably would still be without them.
