Authors which do such a shitty work to prove their opinion (I've read most of those books) that they make rightdoid imbeciles (youtube university, name of which escapes me right now) look legit.
I think the main learning point here is that socialism (in the sense of "centralising all production and distribution", not "raising taxes for national healthcare") is so inherently fucked up that their idea of honestly trying to help people is practically indistinguishable from mass genocide.
The truly dark bit of irony in all of this, is that had the Soviets not embarked on their industrialization program (which required a massive overnight reorganization of labor to free up millions of peasants for factory work - hence, the collectivization debacle), they would have certainly lost the coming war - and then there really would have been a mass genocide.

Because the Ukrainians had resisted collectivisation. They had burned their crops and killed their animals. Why should they get to then leave and put a burden on other communities that were struggling. And leave to export their resistance

It’s because they know if people had a choice most would not want their stuff collectivized and have to live at the will of the commune. So better just to say “well either you stay and participate or you will die.”
Most farmers today live at the will of massive agribusinesses and don’t own their stuff. All the profit goes to the agribusiness, it is not shared equally like in a collective farm. Clearly this is superior to the evil Soviet system.
That’s called just having an employer. No one is forcing them to farm or gonna kill them if they choose not to participate. They get a paycheck as spend it as they please. Which most people would choose over a commune.
