You don't speak to an inanimate object or idea, that's a waste of time, where I'm from we use the phrase "You might as well go talk to the phone pole" is a way to signify that someone is wasting their time with whatever they are saying. And when someone says "I'd like to speak to the [idea] that, I can't help but disregard what they are saying.
