The new tank controllers are fucking bananas though. Trying to sort out pump and lights with those cheapass plastic light timer bricks (much less dialing a calcium reactor) sucked balls. Now you put it in a web browser.
The future is now, gramps. No more stories about people getting raided because their dinosaur bulbs pulled as much juice as a closet grow-op. Some rumors of SPS browning due to PAR shifts or something at ~50% of LEDs lifespan, but that was 5 years ago.
Everything is better for convenience, safety, and livestock, but I do miss some of the insane DIY Rube Goldberg solutions the old guys would come up with.
It's amazing. Calcium reactors don't blow up and nuke tanks anymore, because pH controllers don't cost $2k, overskimming isn't a dark art, etc. I keep up with things. I just can't justify getting back into it between the cost and having to travel. You know the second you even think about spending the night away from home, a snail starts trucking it's way towards the overflow to end it all. That and I can't possibly put a Zebrasoma in a nano. And I can't not have one.
