I totally realize most people are going to disagree with me here but I feel compelled to say that closing the sub for a joke wasn't a very kind thing to do. We have seen TONS of posts from vulnerable populations talking about how this sub is a source of support and humor in a dark time. Irony and dirtbagism aside, taking away that support without warning was not okay.
You can say I'm being silly, or humorless or reactionary. Whatever. I love the show and I love this community. But sometimes I come home after dealing with ableism and our nightmare reality all day, and this sub is one of many things that make me feel better. It wasn't a good feeling to find this sub closed for the sake of irony. Maybe that's laughable or pathetic. But for me, it's true.
Call me stupid all you like but this kid’s life is unironically ruined. Of course, you won’t understand that since you don’t get how important normal human relationships are but that’s because you’ve obviously never had any.
How do you know what that kid's life is like? Maybe not only is he a genius but he's also happy and well adjusted. People who are gifted in one area are often gifted in many areas. Just because he's an EE at 9 doesn't make him some autistic shut-in. There was an 11 year old prodigy in my physics program who was a pretty cool kid. He was outgoing and could easily interact with everyone and hold a conversation but it was like talking to a normal 11 year old kid when we weren't discussing the work. From what I understood all his friends were also 11 year olds who were into star wars and legos and shit like that. The little dude was a big help in my computer science class actually.
Just because you are dumb and also lack interpersonal skills doesn't mean everyone else does.
Use your critical thinking skills for a few minutes and just try to imagine what being forced to grow up so early does to a person. It’s not good and I’ve seen it happen before
Allowing a child to grow into his own natural level of ability isn't being "forced" just because that level is much higher than yours.
If a kid has the capacity to learn college physics at age 5, holding them back with a bunch of fuckers still learning their ABCs is legitimately cruel and a shameful waste of human potential.
If the parents are beating or otherwise abusing the child that's one thing but there's no reason to assume that just because.
Proper socialization amongst similar aged peers is very important for children. There’s a reason depression rates are insanely high amongst kids who were fast tracked like he is. The parents are just using him to develop their own ego
His parents are keeping him apart from both his age peers and study peers. You only need to hear the dad talk for 30 seconds to know he's a humongous douche. They ragequit their son from the university because they didn't want to fast track his degree so he could get into the Guinness world record book.
If it makes you feel any better, the intense pressure from his parents and his probably complete lack of friends will inevitably lead to suicide within the next decade.
