Gavin's a good man and not dumb, but he's also not the brightest, and he has no idea what's possible nowadays for amateur inventors.

I can absolutely believe that a good engineer did all of that by himself. Designing the contraption takes a week maybe two, 3d printing the frame and the other material costs lesss than $1000, even with a several prototypes. The four iphones were likely the biggest expense.

You can buy that code and this is a simple device in terms of filming. Put a movement censor in there or something for an on off switch and that’s easy and cheap.

The guy who made it released a video going over his design and testing and work he did to make it. He mentioned that Mark roper emailed him ideas on how to make it but this guy is the one that actually designed it, made it, and tested it.
