True. I grew up middle class and my gifts became socks and t-shirts around 12. I got the original Xbox around that time and that was the last big gift I got.
Which is fine. That was about when I started mowing neighborhood lawns for money so I didn’t have to wait for my parents to buy me stuff I wanted.
And socks and t-shirts are just fine. Bought? Sure, not much thought was put into it, but they spent that money on you. Handmade stuff is even better. More clothes is never bad.

I am 29 with a wife and young kid. My sister is 31 and my brother is 33. My mom still goes all out for christmas and buys us tons of shit for christmas. Its not like any of us ask for it or expect it but she just genuinely loves it and wants too. Shes went through a rough time when I, the youngest, moved out and started my own life since she and my dad became empty nesters. Her entire life and identity for 20+ years was a mom. She loves being a mom and its one way she can hold on to still feeling like one.

After the initial amusement and annoyance on seeing this post, it filled me with a sense of melancholy, and I think your comment lays out the reason why. They clearly love their son, even if he is currently making it difficult to do so, and he is spurning their love for consumerism and pointless social trends. Honestly, I think they're pretty good gifts, clearly a lot of thought went in to them. I only hope that he realizes the error of his ways sooner rather than later. Because he will realize it eventually, and if it's in his 60s, his selfishness will haunt two generations on their death beds, not just one.
I think that out of all of the sick little realities of the post-Industrial world, I find the breakdown and devaluation of the family unit to be the most unforgivable. I have literally never met a person who was estranged from their family and happy in life. Which makes sense, we are family-focused creatures, every civilization in human history has had the family as the basic building block of society. I don't know why so many people are suddenly so eager to discard this wisdom that has been tried and true over millenia of human history, but I do know that it leads only to ruin.
