Modern anarchism developed, though thinkers like Proudhon, out of the (primarily French) utopian socialism of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; it can perfectly legitimately be considered part of the same political tradition as Marxism, Blanquism, and dozens of other socialist systems and traditions that were products of the same intellectual and historical environment. A more restrictive usage of the word "socialism" could also easily exclude them, for various reasons. Certainly, they are not scientific socialists; they are still very much utopians.
