Rape is pretty much defined as any sex without consent and carries a maximum sentence of life. In other European countries the victim must prove that there was an element of physical force and the maximum sentence is something like 15 or so years in most countries. In Spain the guy would probably get a few years for sexual assault if he would've got convicted at all.

He got a life sentence, so he has to serve a minimum of 30 years before he can appeal for anything and it's likely he'll die in prison anyway.
