In World of Warcraft, Cataclysm Expansion, there was a leader of the Horde called Garrosh Hellscream.
He is Trump.

I'm going to explain: Garrosh was NOT a good leader in this expansion... but he was successful.
What's the difference?

Garrosh did the most Ass Backwards actions anyone could imagine:
Attacking any and all Alliance fleets without being prompted, or provoked, or even if they were a strategic military target.
This often handed him a massive L when it came to any sort of military engagement for that particular battle... however it did end up giving him a victory, later, and one that was always never earned, or won due to the intervention of players and NPCs.
One zone had him, recklessly, attack an entire fleet despite him being completely and utterly outnumbered. He didn't win, in the least, and when he crashed his forces found reinforce in the form of an alliance of convenience. With those numbers, he won the day - and claimed victory as being a smart and intelligent leader... problem was other people thought he was, indeed, smart and intelligent... when he was not.

He mashed buttons on the controller of his leadership and just happened to come out on top.

The next expansion he had to be forcibly removed because of how big his head got, without merit. He started to favor only one faction of his people, pitting the others against them, comparing them, and finally just ignoring the rest of his people and only following those who were allied heavily with him and him alone.
That's Trump. Trump doesn't know what he's doing, but due to the mutual interest of "not going to war" Iran, after shelling us, backed down. It was a "Tit-for-Tat" retaliation, Iran doesn't want war... but they weren't just going to let a general get assassinated with impunity.
Trump is a complete moron, no one thought this was a good idea. We lucked out that Iran feared that Trump was dumb enough to commit to a full-on war... and Trump would have, 100%, so they backed down.
I am still shocked Trump did, and I can only imagine there was a room of joint chiefs and Ivanka begging him to de-escalate. (FYI I rather like Ivanka - say what you will be hse's the only voice of reason in the room whenever Trump is making a decision.)
