I'm reading some old piece of history about my native village in Europe (F*ance). The tradition was that after a long day in summer, at night, young women were gathered around a camp fire. When the signal by the elders was given, they would run into the night, then the young men would try to grab one of the girsl in the dark woods. First-come, first served. You had to marry the girl you catched. And she was obliged too.

Spoiler : the best runners weren't always the most handsome ones, everyone had a chance.
