[Ongoing drama, combination Hollywood drama and film review] Lee Child Says Tom Cruise Is Too Tiny to Keep Playing Jack Reacher
1 2020-01-18 by The_Great_I_Am_Not
So, for those who don't know, an author known as Lee Childs has written 21 so far novels about a character known as Jack Reacher. If I feel like it later, I'll explain more about the nature of the character in the books vs the movies.
But now, https://collider.com/jack-reacher-amazon-series-details/, Amazon is making a "reboot" of the series, and some "people" are happy, some people are pissed.
Essentially, the main issue is that in the best selling book series, Jack Reacher is a 6'5" 250 lb man who is both very, very smart and physically adept. But even though Tom Cruise actually funded and produced the movie adaptations, Lee Childs has stood up against him and said he just wasn't sized well enough to represent the character.

I also had misgivings about a manlet playing reacher, but it does kinda make all the bad guys underestimating him seem less retarded so it didnt end up bothering me. I havent watched the second but the first was a pretty good action movie imo

I liked the first one but isn't a big part of the character that he is so physically intimidating

It is, and it makes the actual fights where he just wrecks people less realistic, but he is a combat genius or whatever so its fine

In the books, there are a few recurring themes that Reacher has.
In his vagabond lifestyle, he only carries id and a toothbrush, no luggage.
He wears the same clothes until he decides to change them, then he buys "new" ones at a thrift store and immediately discards the old ones.
He never carries a weapon, but only picks up one from his adversaries. When he's done with it, for an immediate purpose, he completely dismantles it (magazine out of chamber, slide separated away from base) and throws them all away in separate directions.
In a purely fantasy world, I can't imagine what would happen between Jack Reacher and John Wick if they were to find themselves in the same universe and time.
It's hard to consider, but based on the character's nature, I'd bet Reacher would best Wick by a small margin, morals aside.

That reads like someone's autistic speed run challenge.

I don't think so, based upon the book series Reacher, not the movie version.
But it's a toss up. In a hypothetical universe where both characters were real and at odds with each other, I think Reacher would have the upper hand.
Although, both characters, ultimately, have the same values, so I can't see how they'd be at odds with each other and they'd team up to defeat the bad people.

The fight sequences in Jack Reacher 1 were apparently coordinated by an ex-SEAL.

The 2nd one is a good movie, too. As long as you kinda separate the lore of Jack Reacher from it.
On its own, it's a fun movie, and Cobie Smulders delivers a very good performance.

Disagree wholeheartedly. Jack reacher 2 is the only movie I ever thought about leaving the theater in the middle. The cinematography was so much worse, and the fucking kid weighed it down so much.

I disagree with that, I thought her performance was good, contributed appropriately to the story, and the very end was.....touching.

Is this series like the Jack Ryan series where the author is clearly imagining himself as the main character and is constantly jacking himself off by making him incredibly smart , successful with women and a superhero?

Yes.
Still a fun story series; like James Bond, except with more heart and mass.

That's why we need a reboot of Remo Williams. It's much easier for me to relate to a fat slob who gets bullied into becoming an action hero by an old asian man.

That’s weird, I remember him saying that he actually liked Tom Cruise because he had Jack Reacher’s “unstoppable” vibe, and that was more important than any physical description, which I agree with.
There’s not much subtlety to a big scary man also being a tough guy. But an ordinary looking (or even manlet) fellow who will lay your ass out? That’s interesting.

You're right, there were articles about him saying that. But, it was probably because Tom Cruise was paying for, and wanted to play the character, whereas now that Amazon wants to make a series, Lee Child is a little bolder in expressing what he wants to see.
That's just my take.
