I watched a very good drama film tonight that I wanted to share (not joking)

Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
So, we were undecided about whatever streaming services shows or movies we wanted to watch, and we're just looking at the listings for cable stuff playing, and this movie showed up on fx. I'd never heard of it, but it was listed as a comedy. So I pulled it up on wiki, and saw:
The film received widespread acclaim, particularly for McDormand and Rockwell's performances and McDonagh's screenplay. McDormand and Rockwell each won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and SAG Award for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. McDonagh won a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award for his original screenplay, while the film also won the Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for Best Picture.
So, why not give it a chance? Just a few minutes, see how it goes.
Now, as the kids say these days, trigger warning. This movie is violent and dark in its own way. It's not horror or gore, but the essential premise is a grieving mother pissed that the cops in a small town aren't doing enough to find her daughter's rapists/killer. So it's dark and you don't want to want watch it if your expecting a comedy.
So in the first few minutes, I noticed that the scenery was the Southern Appalachian mountains, contrary to the title's supposed setting. Just as we starting watching it, the scenery and backdrop was in the area around Asheville, NC, even though the story is supposed to be in Missouri. I know that Missouri doesn't have any terrain like that, and I have spent a whole of time in the area where this movie was filmed and that caught my attention. Later in the movie, there is a scene in an actual real bar in Black Mtn, NC that I have ate and drank in on multiple occasions, that is still there and in operation.
Anyway, kept watching. Turns out, this movie with a relatively ensemble cast, is really good. First of all, it's very original Fargo-ish, and not just because Francis McDormand is the main star, but just because of the vibe. But then, the scenery. And all the actors were good characters, some of them demonstrated character development, and some didn't, all of which contributed to the story.
The only disappointment was the very end, which I think left a little too much hanging, but maybe was meant be set-up for a follow-up.

People with PCOS who are too fat to defend themselves or run away are fun to abuse. I like to take a spoon, heat it up until it's glowing hot, then place it on the skin while they're asleep. The reaction when they wake up after the 25th time of being burned by a redhot piece of metal is amazing. You can literally piecemeal their mental stability down to complete insanity, then leave them in their own homes helpless and alone. :DDDDDDDDDD

I actually was able to watch this in a theatre. A friend of mine picked it out so I was going in completely blind, which I would recommend anyone watching it to do. I enjoyed it, and definitely agree that the ending left quite a cliffhanger, but it's much better to leave it like that imo. The movie has a lot of great twists and character progression as well. Oddly enough I don't think I've seen anyone else mention the movie outside of this post, but I'm not subbed to r/movies and haven't thought of the movie in a very long time.

Couldn't have been too long ago, since the movie only came out 2.5 years ago.
But, otherwise it's best to go into it with few preconceived notions and just pay attention.
Kinda like familyman, it's a good thing.

Don't you have a facebook to post this shit to?
1 The_Great_I_Am_Not 2020-02-16
Don't you have a bicycle to work on instead of complaining about what I post?
1 muck4doo 2020-02-16
No. That's what I pay a bike mechanic to do.

As long as you pay properly and fairly for that which you aren't capable of or willing to do, then ok.
1 muck4doo 2020-02-16
I pay someone more skilled at the task. Doesn't change the fact this belongs on facebook.

While I did like many aspects of the film I was pretty down with its nihilism and I really didn't feel much of an uptick of positivity for the latter half. Infact, I felt that the film ended with them driving to hell on a road of good intentions. I also couldn't quite suspend my disbelief to fully buy into its reality.
Yet despite all that, this is a film I worth watching. It certainly has some great acting, dialogue and pretty powerful scenes.
1 The_Great_I_Am_Not 2020-02-16
You missed it. It is there.
1 Tritium3016 2020-02-16
Yeah kinda, I suppose, if I'm feeling charitable.
1 The_Great_I_Am_Not 2020-02-16
Coincidentally, I was having a discussion this morning with a minister about this word.
In some translations of the bible, this is mistranslated. In modern parlance, charity is thought of as just giving, like "giving to a charity", as in (((money)))
But in many translations of ancient texts, charity just means love.
Faith, hope and love. And Love is the greatest of these.

This movie was trash, and I know because I saw it in theaters full of wh*te boomers and they all loved it. Maybe I would have liked it more if they weren't still applauding the 17th time Frances McDormand acts like a cunt to somebody who doesn't deserve it, but I doubt it. I would have laughed at the daughter's last words if I wasn't so disgusted at how cliche that whole scene was.
At least I got to see Phantom Thread immediately after to cleanse my palette.

wow bro you have good taste 😨
1 Kenilwort 2020-02-16
White boomers are the only people that watch movies in movie theaters anymore outside of capeshitters lol. Which one are you?
1 Fletch71011 2020-02-16
How in the hell did you enjoy a movie where the most exciting thing that happened was someone sewing a dress?
1 Kenilwort 2020-02-16
Oh shit, are there other dramatards in WNC? BFO NIMBYism BANANAs yo
1 texanapocalypse33 2020-02-16
How have you not seen this movie? Everyone was singing it's praises ~2 years ago.
1 The_Great_I_Am_Not 2020-02-16
I spent too much time on r/drama and working a real blue collar job.
I just missed it somehow. Kinda like how I missed We're the Millers until 5 years after it came out, I don't pay attention to movies, or the movie industry all that much, and so I only get to catch up later.

If you want some more small town kino, check out "Wind River" or "Hell or High Water"
"Manchester by the Sea" is probably my favorite movie from the past 5 years

i like the scene when Sam Rockwell beats the living daylights out of the journalist kid
1 The_Great_I_Am_Not 2020-02-16
Violence should never be the immediate answer to any situation, but especially not that situation.
I might consider beating the daylights out of you for thinking that's ok, but I wouldn't do that.
Because I don't do that. I'd just restrain you and tie you up with my belt. After I had spanked you with it.
