Supporters of Bernie Sanders found a Twitter account purporting to be a Nigerian supporter of Bernie’s opponent (Pete Buttigieg) had posted a tweet starting with “Hey its Lis.” Lis Smith is Pete’s comms director, so people started to think the account was fake and being operated by Lis Smith to create the appearance of black support for Pete.
They dug through his timeline and found a bunch of other “evidence” that he wasn’t real including his posting pattern and use of American English, and the idea that it didn’t make sense for a Nigerian man to be such a big fan of an American presidential candidate.
This went on for most of Sunday until Ashley Feinberg who is sort of known for reporting on fake accounts of famous people talked to the man on FaceTime, where he confirmed he was a real Nigerian and a real Pete supporter.
The people who had been tweeting gleefully about this all day had to issue pathetic apologies to a person they hate. Example:
