If renting didn't exist then housing prices would be much lower, and more people would own their homes or at least be building equity by paying off a mortgage in their name instead of someone elses. Renting apartments in urban areas is a different story but you said we're talking about small scale landlords. That's mostly people who got ahead a little bit, managed to save enough for a down payment, then rented to pay the mortgage with a little extra added to make them some profit. Rent is more than a mortgage, otherwise these landlords wouldn't make any money. Why should we be grateful they have managed to make money off us? You think people would cease to live places if there wasn't landlords? They need us as much as we need them

If you gave a chapo a free house, how long before he starts demanding free plumbers, contractors, appliance repair, etc because he's so used to getting those for free when he rents? There will always be a cost to having a nice place to live, you either gotta rent, pay for the upkeep, or do it yourself.
